Air Operations, EuropeThe Allied bombing effort this month can be divided into four categories. First, general strategic bombing, area bombing carried out solely by the heavy bombers of the RAF. Targets include Kiel, Bremen and Brunswick. Second, the attacks on particular target systems including oil, rail transport and aircraft manufacturing. Oil targets are attacked by both British and Americans and include Zeitz, Bohlen, Freita, Kolin, Poolitz and Hamburg-Meerbeck. Rail centers hit are Saarbrucken, Mulhouse, Strasbourg and others. Aircraft works bombed are Anklam, Neustadt and Rakmel. The third type of operation is in direct support of the ground forces. British light and medium forces fly 33,000 sorties in this work.
|
The American fighter-bombers fly 24,000 missions and their medium bombers a further 8,500 in which they drop 10,500 tons of bombs. The lighter forces are in action everywhere and claim to destroy 12,000 vehicles, 850 tanks and much more. The heavy bomber forces are also involved in such attacks from time to time. The efforts of the RAF on August 7-8 and 14 are especially large. The final category of attacks is against the V-weapon sites. Most of these are carried out by British forces. The most notable raid is the 2,000 tons dropped on the depot at Trossy St Maximin. Developments during the month include shuttle raids by the 8th Air Force in which planes fly to Russia and then Italy, attacking on each trip. Also large forces from Bomber Command are sent over Germany during daylight for the first time since the early months of the war. In all the US 8th and 15th Air Forces drop 75,000 tons and Bomber Command 65,000 tons. The German V-weapon effort also continues, causing 4,000 casualties in Britain this month. |
Air Operations, Far EastThere are Superfortress raids on Nagasaki and Yawata. There are in addition by now the usual range of attacks on targets in New Guinea and the Marianas. Davao on Mindanao is also hit. (Allied Ships Lost to U-boats this month) |

ChinaThe Japanese still besiege Hengyang, frustrating attempts by the Chinese garrison to open a gap through the enemy lines. The US 14th Air Force has carried out 4,454 missions since May 26 in support of the Chinese forces engaged in central east China. [ | ]Diplomatic RelationsAn anti-Japanese Burmese government-in-exile is formed in India. [ | ]Eastern FrontTroops from Ivan Chernyakhovsky's 3rd Belorussian Front, heading for Königsberg in East Prussia, take Kaunas, capital of Lithuania. Elements of the 1st Baltic Front reach the Gulf of Riga about 25 miles west of the city. However, the Russians are unable to consolidate so as to capture Riga and isolate the German Army Group North from the rest of the German army. Many of the routes leading to east Prussia from the Baltic States, (described by the Germans as Ostland) are cut. In Poland the patriots of the Home Army (Armija Krajowa), under 'General Bor' the nom de guerre of Gen Tadeusz Komorovski, begin open operations in Warsaw. This army is aligned politically with the exile government in London and, although by no means of one mind in political affairs, is generally anti-communist. The rising is timed so that when the Russians arrive in Warsaw, as they seem certain to do very shortly, they will find an established Polish government with the prestige of having liberated the national capital. However, the Russian accounts claim that because of the long rapid advance they have made during July, they are unable, for the moment, to move further. The Russian advance halts suddenly at the suburb of Praga, the other side of the Vistula. The western position is that the Russians have stopped so that the Germans would do the job wiping out the anti-Soviet forces in Poland. The most telling point on the western side is the reluctance of the Russians to lend any help to British and American plans and, after much negotiation, attempts to drop supplies to the Poles. Needless to say, the insurgents are surrounded and virtually annihilated by the Germans. The remnants of the patriot forces surrender on October 2.[MORE] [ | ]Finland, PoliticsPresident Risto Ryti resigns. Marshal Karl Gustav Mannerheim is chosen to replace him. The Finns hope this will facilitate negotiations with the Soviets. [ | ]GuamUS Marines and infantry pursue the enemy northwards, reaching a line that goes from the west coast north of Agana to Pago Bay on the east coast. They have taken more than half of the island. [ | ]New GuineaOperations on Biak and on the Vogelkop peninsula continue on a small scale. In the Aitape sector the Americans advance as far as the Niumen stream, stabilizing their advanced lines. [ | ] |
Occupied PolandThe Home Army in Warsaw rises against the German. Led by Gen Tadeusz Komorowski, there are 38,000 insurgents in the city. The Home Army is under the command of the government-in-exile in London, As such, it can expect little aid from the Soviets. The Polish resistance - the 'Home Army' - in Warsaw rises as the Soviets approach. Commanded by Gen Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski, the Warsaw corps of 50,000 troops attacks the relatively weak German force and within three days gains control of most of the city. The Germans send in reinforcements and force the Poles into a defensive position, bombarding them with air and artillery attacks for the next 63 days. Meanwhile, the Red Army, which had been detained during the first days of the insurrection by a German assault, occupies a position at Praga, a suburb across the Vistula from Warsaw, and remains idle. In addition, the Soviet government refuses to allow the Western Allies to use Soviet airbases to airlift supplies to the beleaguered Poles. Without Allied support, the Home Army is split into small, disconnected units. It was forced to surrender when its supplies gave out (October 2). Bór-Komorowski and his forces were taken prisoner, and the Germans then systematically deported the remainder of the city's population and destroyed the city block by block. [ | ]TinianAll organized resistance by the Japanese comes to an end after the failure of their last counterattack. As usual the garrison has been completely wiped out. There are over 6,000 Japanese dead and 250 prisoners, an unusually large proportion. The Americans have lost 390 killed and 1,800 wounded. []United States, Home FrontManuel Quezon, President of the Filipino Government-in-Exile, dies at the age of 65. Sergio Osmena is sworn-in. [ | ]Western FrontGen Patton's 3rd Army becomes operational and takes position on the Allied right flank. The US forces are now organized as 12th Army Group (Bradley), 1st Army (Hodges) and 3rd Army. Patton has 4 Corps under his command - the VIII, XII, XV and XX. The VIII Corps, transferred from 1st Army, is commanded by Gen Troy Middleton, and consists of 4 divisions - the 4th Arm, 6th Arm, 8th and 79th. Miles Dempsey's British 2nd Army and Harry Crerar's 1st Canadian Army for 21 Army Group which Montgomery commands. As well as this post he still etains overall direction of the ground forces. Patton's main task initially is to overrun Brittany, but some of his troops will head for Le Mans from the beginning. US 1st Army will advance on Mortain. The British and Canadians will continue to attack between Caumont and Caen. In this sector the British XXX Corps is at the moment advancing on Villers Bocage. The XV Corps, under Gen Wade H. Haislip, consists of 2 infantry divisions, the 83rd and 90th, and the 5th Arm. The other 2 corps in the 3rd Army, the XII and XX, still being formed, are commanded by Gen Manton S. Eddy and Gen Walton H. Walker. In the 1st Army sector, now commanded by Gen Hodges, as Gen Bradley has moved up to command the 12th Army Group, the VII and XIX Corps ocntinue their advance in the area of Vire, northeast of Avranches, which has been taken. Western FrontThe Germans begin an important counterattack, Operation LUTTICH, ordered by Hitler just east of Mortain. German armored divisions penetrate into the American positions between between VII and XIX Corps. The attackers are from 2nd and 116th Panzer Divisions. She is in escort of Convoy EBC-66. 66 survivors are picked up by the British armed trawler Jaques Morgand and the British landing ship LCT-644. The US freighter Ezra Weston is also torpedoed by U-667 en route to Falmouth, England from Avonmouth. The British landing craft LCT-24 and the French trawler Jacques Margand pick up the survivors. [ | ]CeylonA floating dock sinks at Trincomalee. The HMS Valiant is seriously damaged. ChinaThe Japanese capture Hengyang. This is the prelude to the launching of the ICHI-GO plan, which is to lead to the capture of all the American airfields in the southeast of China, and of a huge expanse of territory. [ | ]Eastern FrontThe AK forces have now managed to seize control of most of Warsaw and have expanded their strength with much captured German equipment. SS Gen Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski is appointed to lead the German forces charged with defeating the Poles. The units employed by the Germans are mostly SS, police and punishment battalions, all alike in their cruel and violent methods. After complaints from Guderian and others the worst offenders will be taken out of the fight and some of their leaders executed. Western FrontThe German garrison of Brest, in Brittany, rejects the surrender ultimatum of the commander of the American 6th Armored Division. Fierce actions continue around the outskirts of St Malo between the US 8th Division and the German garrison. The 79th Division from XV Corps enters Le Mans while on its right units of the 5th Armored Division, XX Corps, newly in the line advances toward Nantes and Angers. In this sector the Germans deploy several detachments from the LVIII Panzer Corps, the 9th Panzer Division and 708th Infantry Division, brought up from the south of France. In the Avranches sector the German 2nd and 116th Panzer Divs are still trying to penetrate more deeply into the American lines between the American VII and XIX Corps. Although aided by 1,000 Allied aircraft dropping 5,200 tons of bombs, the Canadian II Corps does not succeed in reaching Falaise, 30 miles southeast of Caen. [ | ] |

A powerful German attack was directed at the Old Town's northern and western defense lines. This afternoon soldiers of the Gustaw Battalion captured a German tank, which turned out to be a trap. German troops attacked a barricade in the Old Town Sector with three tanks. Two of their tanks withdrew under heavy fire from insurgents but the third one, though smaller in size, sped toward the barricade under cover of German fire. The crew then jumped out and escaped. The insurgents noticed that the tank was intact and seemed to be in good working order so they dismantled part of the barricade at Podwale Street and drove the tank into their compound on Kilinskiego Street. At first it caused quite a sensation and hundreds of insurgents and civilians gathered round to get a look at it. Forty five minutes later in front of house no. 1, the tank exploded with great force killing over 350 people. Among the dead are about 100 Polish soldiers from the 'Rog' Regiment and units from 'Gustaw','Wigry', and 'Gosdawa' battalions, as well as many civilians. AK engineers later concluded that the Germans had rigged the tank with high explosives which was detonated by remote control. CENTRAL SECTORBach-Zelewski realizes it is going to take a house-by-house struggle to destroy the Home Army. To the south units of XII and XX Corps are advancing on Orleans and Chartres from around Le Mans. Southwest of Le Mans, meanwhile, the American 4th Armored Division and 35th Division are concentrated under the command of Gen Manton Eddy in XII Corps. [ | ]New GuineaOn Numfoor Island the main Japanese garrison manages to break off contact with the American paratroopers and takes refuge in the area of Pakriki, on the central south coast. [ | ]Occupied FranceThere is an uprising against the Nazi occupation of Paris as 20,000 gendarmes go on strike and capture 700 Germans. [ | ]Southern FranceAllied forces land in southern France between Toulon and Cannes. This is Operation DRAGOON, originally and for the most of the planning stage, known as ANVIL. The code name has been changed because it is believed that the Germans have discovered it and its significance. The landing forces are from Gen Alexander M. Patch's US 7th Army. Lucian Truscott's VI Corps provides the 3 divs that make up the bulk of the assault force. The follow-up formation is Gen Jean de Lattre's II French Corps. French commando units also land from the sea in the first wave and there is also an airborne attack. This involves 5,000 men from a composite parachute group and they drop inland near Le Muy. Before these or the seaborne force go in there are attacks by 1,300 land-based aircraft and naval shelling. Adm Hewitt is in command of the naval forces. |
The largest group of special force troops land on the island of Levante with cover from the battleship Lorraine and other vessels. Gen John Daniels' 3rd Infantry Division lands in the Baie de Cavalaire and among the bombardment group here is the battleship Ramillies. The fire support for Gen William W. Eagles' 45th Infantry is provided by the battleships Texas (BB-35) and Nevada (BB-36). This landing is in the Baie de Bugnon. The left flank Division is the 36th Infantry, Gen John E. Dahlquist, with support from the Arkansas (BB-33). As well as the land-based air cover, 5 British and 2 American escort carriers add fighter support (216 aircraft). In addition to the battleships mentioned fire support is also provided by 20 cruisers and 31 destroyers. A further 4 cruisers and 60 destroyers perform escort duties. There is almost no resistance to the landing and only 183 casualties are taken. One US ship, LST-282, is sunk by a radio-controlled bomb. Churchill has come to observe the operation from aboard a destroyer and, from his account in his memoirs, seems to have been bored by the lack of action. The German force in the south of France is Gen Friedrich Weise's 19th Army. This formation has only 7 poor quality infantry divs and the better trained and equipped 11th Panzer Division to cover the whole of the south and southeast of the country. []Southwest PacificThe Allied High Command issues directives for the invasion of Morotai Island in the northern Moluccas, northwest of New Guinea and south of the Philippines. The island can be made into an ideal jumping-off place for operations against the Philippines themselves. 2 divisions and a regimental combat group under the command of Gen Charles P. Hall will carry out the operation. The US 3rd Amphibous Force, having completed its operations in the Marianas earlier than expected, is ordered to get ready for the invasion of the Palau Islands. []Western FrontIn northern France the British VIII Corps enters Tinchebray from the north, about 12 miles northeast of Mortain. Other British and Canadian units are attacking fiercely along a line from here to east of Falaise. In the Canadian 1st Army sector, the 4th Armored Division of II Corps advances in the direction of Falaise, east of the road between Falaise and Caen. Northeast of Falaise the Polish 1st Armored Division manages to secure a bridgehead on the east bank of the Dives River. In the Avranches-Mortain sector the Germans have evacuated the Mortain salient and it is immediately reoccupied by the American VII Corps. From just south of Tinchebray to Argentan the US VII Corps and V Corps are attacking northward and trapped as meat in the sandwich are the divs of the German 7th Army and units of 5th Panzer Army and Panzer Group Eberbach. These forces are now beginning a desperate retreat to the east. Field Marshal von Kluge is forced to take cover from Allied air attacks for most of the day while attempting to visit the front. His long absence from HQ increases Hitler's supicions that von Kluge is disloyal and attempting to defect to the Allied side. He waits until twilight hidden in a cornfield, then manages to return to headquarters. In Brittany, units of the 83rd Division enter Dinard, while the position of the German garrison at St Malo grows increasingly critical. In the US 1st Army sector, units of the V Corps reach the hills that dominate Tinchebray from the south. [ | ] |

On Biak Island, too, Japanese resistance is almost exhausted. [ | ]Northern FranceThe capture of Falaise is completed by the Canadian 2nd Division. The damage to the town in the bombing and bitter fighting of the past few days has been so severe that in many places it is impossible to tell where the streets once were. The gap between the Canadian front to the north and the US V Corps to the south through which the units of the German 5th Panzer Army and 7th Army can escape encirclement is reduced to a minimum. But during the previous night, without asking Hitler's authority, von Kluge orders the withdrawal of the units of those 2 armies which are in the pocket between Falaise and Argentan. Hitler dismisses Field Marshal von Kluge. Walther Model is appointed in his place. Von Kluge is suspected of being involved in the bomb plot to kill Hitler of which he had practically no knowledge, but he had been involved with the Allies on armistice negotiations. Von Kluge commits suicide on Aug 18 rather that face a treason trial. In Brittany, the garrison of the St Malo citadel surrenders to the Americans of the 83rd Division, VIII Corps. During the night the rearguards of Gen Paul Hausser's 7th Army manage to withdraw to the east bank of the Orne River. At Chambois, between Falaise and Argentan, units of the Canadian II Corps coming from the north join up with advance guards of the US XV Corps, closing the so-called Falaise gap. A considerable German force is still to the west. The German retreat through the Falaise gap in the past few days has provided unrivalled opportunities for the Allies fighter-bombers since there has been an enormous amount of vulnerable traffic compelled to travel by day on virtually one road. In 3rd Army's advance toward the Seine forward patrols reach Versailles. Field-Marshal von Kluge commits suicide. Once the architech of so many German victories, but now deprived of his command and suspected of being involved in the attempt on Hitler's life, von Kluge takes his own life at Metz rather than be hauled before a People's Court. He leaves a letter for Hitler, in which he writes among other things: 'I do not know whether Field-Marshal Model will be able to restore the position. I hope so with all my heart. But if not, and if your new weapons, in which such burning faith is placed, do not bring success, then, mein Führer, take the decision to end the war. Northern FranceAll the Allied armies begin a rapid advance to the northeast in pursuit of the broken and retreating German forces. The Canadian II Corps is advancing in the north toward Rouen, the British XIX and XXX Corps and American XV Corps in the center to the north of Paris and the American V, XX and XII Corps south of the French capital. In the area of Mantes-Gassicourt the US 79th Division of XV Corps widens its bridgehead across the Seine. In the south the US 4th Armored Division enters Sens. Although at this stage, the invasion of France is behind the schedule set out in the OVERLORD plan, this will be corrected by the speed of the advance in the next few weeks. Field Marshal Model informs Berlin the German 7th Army is no longer an effective fighting force. The 7th, as well as the 5th Panzer and 15th Armies, had adhered to Hitler's orders to stand and fight. Instead of withdrawing and re-grouping, the Germans suffered enormous losses while obeying Hitler and exposed the entire western front. [ | ]Pacific
