Chronology of World War II

August 1944

Air Operations, Europe

The Allied bombing effort this month can be divided into four categories. First, general strategic bombing, area bombing carried out solely by the heavy bombers of the RAF. Targets include Kiel, Bremen and Brunswick. Second, the attacks on particular target systems including oil, rail transport and aircraft manufacturing. Oil targets are attacked by both British and Americans and include Zeitz, Bohlen, Freita, Kolin, Poolitz and Hamburg-Meerbeck. Rail centers hit are Saarbrucken, Mulhouse, Strasbourg and others. Aircraft works bombed are Anklam, Neustadt and Rakmel. The third type of operation is in direct support of the ground forces. British light and medium forces fly 33,000 sorties in this work.

The American fighter-bombers fly 24,000 missions and their medium bombers a further 8,500 in which they drop 10,500 tons of bombs. The lighter forces are in action everywhere and claim to destroy 12,000 vehicles, 850 tanks and much more. The heavy bomber forces are also involved in such attacks from time to time. The efforts of the RAF on August 7-8 and 14 are especially large. The final category of attacks is against the V-weapon sites. Most of these are carried out by British forces. The most notable raid is the 2,000 tons dropped on the depot at Trossy St Maximin.

Developments during the month include shuttle raids by the 8th Air Force in which planes fly to Russia and then Italy, attacking on each trip. Also large forces from Bomber Command are sent over Germany during daylight for the first time since the early months of the war. In all the US 8th and 15th Air Forces drop 75,000 tons and Bomber Command 65,000 tons. The German V-weapon effort also continues, causing 4,000 casualties in Britain this month.

Air Operations, Far East

There are Superfortress raids on Nagasaki and Yawata. There are in addition by now the usual range of attacks on targets in New Guinea and the Marianas. Davao on Mindanao is also hit.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Daylight Ops:
  • 777 aircraft are sent to bomb various V-weapons sites. Included in this total are 385 Lancasters, 324 Halifaxex and 67 Mosquitos. Only 79 aircraft bomb targets. The reason why the others do not are no reported by Bomber Command, but the most likely reason is poor weather conditions.
    • No aircraft are lost.

Air Operations, Marianas

  • Organized Japanese resistance on Tinian ceases.
  • The 318th Fighter Group, 6th Night Fighter Squadron, and 41st Medium Bomb Group will continue to support US ground forces on Guam and conduct attacks against the bypassed Japanese bases on Pagan and Rota islands.

[larr2larr2 | rarr1rarr2]

Battle of the Atlantic

The Kriegsmarine deploys radio-controlled Linsen assault boats against Allied shipping. These small vessels are packed with 600 pounds of explosives and account for the early loss of the destroyer HMS Quorn and various other vessels.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr2]

China

The Japanese still besiege Hengyang, frustrating attempts by the Chinese garrison to open a gap through the enemy lines.

The US 14th Air Force has carried out 4,454 missions since May 26 in support of the Chinese forces engaged in central east China.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Diplomatic Relations

An anti-Japanese Burmese government-in-exile is formed in India.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Eastern Front

Troops from Ivan Chernyakhovsky's 3rd Belorussian Front, heading for Königsberg in East Prussia, take Kaunas, capital of Lithuania. Elements of the 1st Baltic Front reach the Gulf of Riga about 25 miles west of the city. However, the Russians are unable to consolidate so as to capture Riga and isolate the German Army Group North from the rest of the German army. Many of the routes leading to east Prussia from the Baltic States, (described by the Germans as Ostland) are cut.

In Poland the patriots of the Home Army (Armija Krajowa), under 'General Bor' the nom de guerre of Gen Tadeusz Komorovski, begin open operations in Warsaw. This army is aligned politically with the exile government in London and, although by no means of one mind in political affairs, is generally anti-communist. The rising is timed so that when the Russians arrive in Warsaw, as they seem certain to do very shortly, they will find an established Polish government with the prestige of having liberated the national capital. However, the Russian accounts claim that because of the long rapid advance they have made during July, they are unable, for the moment, to move further.

The Russian advance halts suddenly at the suburb of Praga, the other side of the Vistula. The western position is that the Russians have stopped so that the Germans would do the job wiping out the anti-Soviet forces in Poland. The most telling point on the western side is the reluctance of the Russians to lend any help to British and American plans and, after much negotiation, attempts to drop supplies to the Poles. Needless to say, the insurgents are surrounded and virtually annihilated by the Germans. The remnants of the patriot forces surrender on October 2.[MORE]

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

Finland, Politics

President Risto Ryti resigns. Marshal Karl Gustav Mannerheim is chosen to replace him. The Finns hope this will facilitate negotiations with the Soviets.

[rarrrarr | rarr]

Guam

US Marines and infantry pursue the enemy northwards, reaching a line that goes from the west coast north of Agana to Pago Bay on the east coast. They have taken more than half of the island.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr2]

New Guinea

Operations on Biak and on the Vogelkop peninsula continue on a small scale.

In the Aitape sector the Americans advance as far as the Niumen stream, stabilizing their advanced lines.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

Occupied Poland

The Home Army in Warsaw rises against the German. Led by Gen Tadeusz Komorowski, there are 38,000 insurgents in the city. The Home Army is under the command of the government-in-exile in London, As such, it can expect little aid from the Soviets.

The Polish resistance - the 'Home Army' - in Warsaw rises as the Soviets approach. Commanded by Gen Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski, the Warsaw corps of 50,000 troops attacks the relatively weak German force and within three days gains control of most of the city. The Germans send in reinforcements and force the Poles into a defensive position, bombarding them with air and artillery attacks for the next 63 days. Meanwhile, the Red Army, which had been detained during the first days of the insurrection by a German assault, occupies a position at Praga, a suburb across the Vistula from Warsaw, and remains idle. In addition, the Soviet government refuses to allow the Western Allies to use Soviet airbases to airlift supplies to the beleaguered Poles.

Without Allied support, the Home Army is split into small, disconnected units. It was forced to surrender when its supplies gave out (October 2). Bór-Komorowski and his forces were taken prisoner, and the Germans then systematically deported the remainder of the city's population and destroyed the city block by block.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Tinian

All organized resistance by the Japanese comes to an end after the failure of their last counterattack. As usual the garrison has been completely wiped out. There are over 6,000 Japanese dead and 250 prisoners, an unusually large proportion. The Americans have lost 390 killed and 1,800 wounded.

[rarrrarr]

United States, Home Front

Manuel Quezon, President of the Filipino Government-in-Exile, dies at the age of 65. Sergio Osmena is sworn-in.

[rarr2rarr2 | rarr2rarr2]

Western Front

Gen Patton's 3rd Army becomes operational and takes position on the Allied right flank. The US forces are now organized as 12th Army Group (Bradley), 1st Army (Hodges) and 3rd Army. Patton has 4 Corps under his command - the VIII, XII, XV and XX. The VIII Corps, transferred from 1st Army, is commanded by Gen Troy Middleton, and consists of 4 divisions - the 4th Arm, 6th Arm, 8th and 79th. Miles Dempsey's British 2nd Army and Harry Crerar's 1st Canadian Army for 21 Army Group which Montgomery commands. As well as this post he still etains overall direction of the ground forces.

Patton's main task initially is to overrun Brittany, but some of his troops will head for Le Mans from the beginning. US 1st Army will advance on Mortain. The British and Canadians will continue to attack between Caumont and Caen. In this sector the British XXX Corps is at the moment advancing on Villers Bocage.

The XV Corps, under Gen Wade H. Haislip, consists of 2 infantry divisions, the 83rd and 90th, and the 5th Arm. The other 2 corps in the 3rd Army, the XII and XX, still being formed, are commanded by Gen Manton S. Eddy and Gen Walton H. Walker.

In the 1st Army sector, now commanded by Gen Hodges, as Gen Bradley has moved up to command the 12th Army Group, the VII and XIX Corps ocntinue their advance in the area of Vire, northeast of Avranches, which has been taken.

In the British sector the XXX Corps is advancing in the direction of Villers-Bocage.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Eastern Front

POLAND - The battle at Wolomin continues, with the Germans feeding in the 4th Panzer Division. The Soviet 69th Army crosses the Vistula at Pulawy.

CENTRAL SECTOR

The fighting at Wolomin intensifies as the Germans throw the 4th Panzer Division in to support the 3 panzer divisions already in action. The Poles continue their attacks in Warsaw, gaining control of a larger area of the city. Significantly, an assault upon the Okacie airbase fails. The capture of the airfield would have given the Home Army a point of supply for Allied aircraft. The Germans defending the base repel repeated Polish attacks and inflict heavy casualties. Hitler appoints SS Gen Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski to command the forces tasked with the defeat of the Polish revolt.

Along the Vistula, the 69th Army succeeds in crossing the Pulawy to support those armies already across near the town.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

Guam

On the left flank the 3rd Marine Division advances northward almost unopposed, and occupies Tiyan airfield; on the right flank the 77th Infantry Division is held up near the village of Barrigada by Japanese units deployed in the jungle perfectly camouflaged positions.

The US submarine Tautog (SS-199) attacks a Japanese convoy off Miki Saki, Honshu, and sinks the army cargo shop Konei Maru (1922t).

[larr2larr | rarrrarr]

Occupied Poland

The Home Army fails to capture Okacie airfield. Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski is appointed commander of the German units ordered to crush the revolt.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

V Weapons

The Germans launch 316 V-1 bombs on London, the highest daily total yet. More than 100 reach the capital and cause great damage to armament factories on the outskirts. The Tower Bridge is also hit.

[larrlarr | rarrrarr2]

Western Front

In the British 2nd Army sector the VIII and XXX Corps continue to advance in the direction of the road that links Vire and Argentan. The VIII Corps of Patton's 3rd Army advances into Brittany, the 6th Armored Division reaches Dinan and the 4th Armored Division the outskirts of Rennes. The VII Corps advances rapidly with the 1st Division plus elements of the 3rd Armored Division towards Mortain, some 25 miles east of Avranches. On the left flank of the VII Corps, the XIX Corps is making a determined advance southeast of the area of Tessy and toward Mortain, taking Villedieu.

Hitler orders a counterattack between Mortain and Avranches to cut off the American forces in Brittany.

For the first time, at the request of the Russians, fighter-bombers of the US 15th Air Force carry out a huge raid on a number of Romanian airfields, and land on Russian bases.

The Gloster Meteor jet fighter debuts against V-1s.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Daylight Ops:
  • 291 aircraft of Nos. 6 and 8 Groups attack the flying bomb sites at Bois de Cassan and Trossy St Maxim in clear visibility. Include in the total are 169 Halifaxes, 112 Lancasters and 10 Mosquitos.
    • 2 Halifaxes of No. 6 Group are lost on the Bois de Cassan raid and 2 Lancasters are lost on the Trossy St Maxim raid.
  • 288 Lancasters of Nos. 1, 3 and 8 Groups attack the Bec-d'Ambes and Pauillac oil storage sites in clear conditions and without a loss. 27 Serrate Mosquitos are used as escorts to the bombers attacking these 2 sites. This is the first use of Group No. 100 Mosquito fighters in this way. They do not encounter any German fighters.
  • 27 Lancasters, 2 Mosquitos and 1 Mustang of No. 617 Squadron attack a railway bridge at Étaples. Some hits are scored but the 1,000-lb bombs used fail to destroy the bridge.
    • There are no losses.
  • 3 Mosquitos attache the Forêt de Nieppe storage site without a loss.
Minor Ops:
  • 12 Halifaxes lay mines off Brest, 29 aircraft are on Resistance ops and there are 11 OTU sorties.

A posthumous Victoria Cross is awarded later to Squadron Leader I. W. Bazalgette of No. 635 Squadron, captain of one of the aircraft lost on the all-No. 8 Group raid on Trossy St Maxim. Bazalgette's Lancaster was hit by flak and set on fire while approaching the target but the pilot carried on to release his markers and bombs on the target. (The statement in the VC citation that Bazalgette was Master Bomber for this raid is not correct, although he had acted as Master Bomber on earlier raids.) On leaving the target, the Lancaster dived steeply, almost out of control, but the pilot was able to recover from this and 4 members of his crew were able to bale out. Bazalgette then made a good crash-landing in an attempt to save his wounded bomb aimer and the mid-upper gunner who was overcome by fumes or smoke, but the Lancaster exploded and all 3 men still inside were killed. Squadron Leader Bazalgette and his 2 comrades are buried at the small village of Senantes.

    Western Front

The Germans begin an important counterattack, Operation LUTTICH, ordered by Hitler just east of Mortain. German armored divisions penetrate into the American positions between between VII and XIX Corps. The attackers are from 2nd and 116th Panzer Divisions. Mortain is retaken by the Germans as they reach Le Mesnil-Tôve, but heavy Allied air attacks help to prevent any more serious loss. The VII and XIX Corps, duly reinforced, prepare to counterattack.

The 6th Armored Division, VIII Corps, reaches Brest in the evening, but it is too late for an assault on the city, and anyway the Americans do not have the equipment necessary for an operation on that scale. The Germans are thus allowed to reinforce their garrison and complete their defense. The 83rd Division continues the battle for St Malo, while on the south coast the 4th Armored Division attacks Lorient.

During the night the Canadian II Corps launches an offensive southwest of Caen in the direction of Falaise after violent bombing from the air. More that 1,000 RAF heavy bombers drop in excess of 3,000 tons of bombs on the German positions.

    • 17 Lancasters and 10 Halifaxes are lost.
  • 297 aircraft including 191 Lancasters, 96 Halifaxes and 10 Mosquitos are sent to Rüsselsheim. The target for this raid is the Opel motor factory and normal Pathfinder marking methods are used. The motor factory is only slightly damaged. The local report states that the tire and dispatch departments and the powerhouse are hit but most of the bombs fall in open countryside south of the target.
    • 13 Lancasters and 6 Halifaxes are lost.
  • 91 Lancasters, 36 Halifaxes, 12 Stirlings and 5 Mosquitos bomb a German troop concentration and a road junction north of Falaise. The bombing is believed to have been very effective.

Eastern Front

NORTHERN SECTOR

Verro falls as the 67th Army advances upon Tartu and the 1st Shock Army upon Valk (now Valga).

A powerful German attack was directed at the Old Town's northern and western defense lines. This afternoon soldiers of the Gustaw Battalion captured a German tank, which turned out to be a trap. German troops attacked a barricade in the Old Town Sector with three tanks. Two of their tanks withdrew under heavy fire from insurgents but the third one, though smaller in size, sped toward the barricade under cover of German fire. The crew then jumped out and escaped. The insurgents noticed that the tank was intact and seemed to be in good working order so they dismantled part of the barricade at Podwale Street and drove the tank into their compound on Kilinskiego Street. At first it caused quite a sensation and hundreds of insurgents and civilians gathered round to get a look at it. Forty five minutes later in front of house no. 1, the tank exploded with great force killing over 350 people. Among the dead are about 100 Polish soldiers from the 'Rog' Regiment and units from 'Gustaw','Wigry', and 'Gosdawa' battalions, as well as many civilians. AK engineers later concluded that the Germans had rigged the tank with high explosives which was detonated by remote control.

CENTRAL SECTOR

Bach-Zelewski realizes it is going to take a house-by-house struggle to destroy the Home Army. To blast the Poles into submission, the Germans bring up a 600-mm mortar, a pair of 380-mm howitzers and two 280-mm howitzers.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr]

Western Front

German troops start pulling out through the Falaise gap. The escape corridor is held open by fierce German resistance. US and Canadian units begin sweeping around the Falaise-Argentan outlet to close it. Argentan is largely cleared by XV Corps attacks but Gen Bradley, commanding 12th Army Group, orders a halt here. To the south units of XII and XX Corps are advancing on Orleans and Chartres from around Le Mans. Southwest of Le Mans, meanwhile, the American 4th Armored Division and 35th Division are concentrated under the command of Gen Manton Eddy in XII Corps. Their first mission is to advance east in the direction of Orléans.

After reaching Mayenne, the VII Corps moves north toward the road connecting Vire with Argentan.

Air Operations, Europe

RAF aircraft have begun dropping supplies and ammunition for the Polish insurgients in Warsaw.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Daylight Ops:
  • 805 aircraft including 411 Lancasters, 352 Halifaxes and 42 Mosquitos attack 7 German troop positions facing the Canadian 3rd Division which is advancing on Falaise. A careful plan is prepared with Oboe and visual marking, and with a Master Bomber and a deputy at each of the 7 targets. Most of the bombing is accurate and effective but, about half-way through the raids, some aircraft start to bomb a large quarry in which parts of the 12th Canadian Field Regiment are positioned. This mistake may have been caused by the yellow identification flares which are ignited by the Canadians. It is unfortunate that the target indicators being used by the Pathfinders are also yellow. Bomber Command crews claim that the Canadians used the yellow flares before any bombs fell in the quarry. The history of the Canadian units says the bombs fell first. The Master Bombers tries hard to stop further crews bombing in the wrong area, but approximately 70 aircraft bomb the quarry and other nearby Allied positions over a 70-minute period. The Canadians take shelter in their slit trenches and most emerge unscathed though shaken, but 13 men are killed and 53 injured and a large number of vehicles and guns are hit. This is believed to have been the first occasion on which Bomber Command aircraft hits friendly troops during the Battle of Normandy. The Canadian artillery regiment is machine-gunned by RAF Spitfires and USAAF Mustangs the following day.
Details of the Canadian side of the bombing come from Into Action with the 12th Field by Captain TJ Bell (published privately in Canada} and from the personal reminiscences of former Lance-Corporal George R Carter of the 12th Canadian Field Regiment. George Carter's brother, Flying Officer Roy E Carter of No 431 Squadron, was a Bomber Command navigator whose Halifax had been shot down over Holland on the Sterkrade raid of 16/17 June 1944. Roy Carter baled out successfully but, while he was being hidden by Dutch civilians in a house at Tilburg, he was discovered by Germans on 8 July and shot, together with a Pathfinder pilot and an Australian airman. The bloodstained Dutch flag which covered the bodies after their death was brought to England in 1983 and placed in the No 83 Squadron Memorial Chapel in Coningsby parish church.
  • 155 Lancasters and 4 Mosquitos of No. 5 Group make 2 separate attacks on ships in Brest harbor. The Clemenceau and the cruiser Gueydon are both hit and are believed sinking in 'safe' positions which will not hinder Allied use of the port when American troops take possession. The Allied forces are anxious to capture a good port to which supplies and reinforcements for the land battle can be brought in directly from the United States.
    • 2 Lancasters are lost.
  • 1 Wellington flies an RCM sortie.
Evening Ops:
Minor Ops:
  • 32 Mosquitos are sent Berlin, 2 to the Sterkrade oil plant and 2 to the St Trond airfield, 8 Halifaxes and 6 Lancasters lay mines off Biscay ports, 4 aircraft are involved on Resistance operations, and there are 1 RCM and 7 OTU sorties.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr]

Western Front

The Canadian advance has reached to within about 5 miles of Falaise from the north. RAF heavy bombers drop 3,723 tons of bombs in supporting attacks as the Canadian drive continues.

In Brittany, the resistance of the German garrisons in St Malo and Dinard persists. All of St Malo has been cleared except for the ancient citadel in the port area. The US XV Corps begins to move east from around Argentan toward Dreux. Other units are taking post at Argentan.

The 7th Armored Division and the 5th Division, XX Corps, move in the direction of Chartres, and the XII Corps continues its advance toward Orléans.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Southern France

Allied forces land in southern France between Toulon and Cannes. This is Operation DRAGOON, originally and for the most of the planning stage, known as ANVIL. The code name has been changed because it is believed that the Germans have discovered it and its significance. The landing forces are from Gen Alexander M. Patch's US 7th Army. Lucian Truscott's VI Corps provides the 3 divs that make up the bulk of the assault force. The follow-up formation is Gen Jean de Lattre's II French Corps. French commando units also land from the sea in the first wave and there is also an airborne attack. This involves 5,000 men from a composite parachute group and they drop inland near Le Muy. Before these or the seaborne force go in there are attacks by 1,300 land-based aircraft and naval shelling. Adm Hewitt is in command of the naval forces.

The largest group of special force troops land on the island of Levante with cover from the battleship Lorraine and other vessels. Gen John Daniels' 3rd Infantry Division lands in the Baie de Cavalaire and among the bombardment group here is the battleship Ramillies. The fire support for Gen William W. Eagles' 45th Infantry is provided by the battleships Texas (BB-35) and Nevada (BB-36). This landing is in the Baie de Bugnon. The left flank Division is the 36th Infantry, Gen John E. Dahlquist, with support from the Arkansas (BB-33). As well as the land-based air cover, 5 British and 2 American escort carriers add fighter support (216 aircraft). In addition to the battleships mentioned fire support is also provided by 20 cruisers and 31 destroyers. A further 4 cruisers and 60 destroyers perform escort duties. There is almost no resistance to the landing and only 183 casualties are taken. One US ship, LST-282, is sunk by a radio-controlled bomb. Churchill has come to observe the operation from aboard a destroyer and, from his account in his memoirs, seems to have been bored by the lack of action. The German force in the south of France is Gen Friedrich Weise's 19th Army. This formation has only 7 poor quality infantry divs and the better trained and equipped 11th Panzer Division to cover the whole of the south and southeast of the country.

[rarrrarr2]

Southwest Pacific

The Allied High Command issues directives for the invasion of Morotai Island in the northern Moluccas, northwest of New Guinea and south of the Philippines. The island can be made into an ideal jumping-off place for operations against the Philippines themselves. 2 divisions and a regimental combat group under the command of Gen Charles P. Hall will carry out the operation.

The US 3rd Amphibous Force, having completed its operations in the Marianas earlier than expected, is ordered to get ready for the invasion of the Palau Islands.

[rarrrarr]

Western Front

In northern France the British VIII Corps enters Tinchebray from the north, about 12 miles northeast of Mortain. Other British and Canadian units are attacking fiercely along a line from here to east of Falaise. In the Canadian 1st Army sector, the 4th Armored Division of II Corps advances in the direction of Falaise, east of the road between Falaise and Caen. Northeast of Falaise the Polish 1st Armored Division manages to secure a bridgehead on the east bank of the Dives River. In the Avranches-Mortain sector the Germans have evacuated the Mortain salient and it is immediately reoccupied by the American VII Corps. From just south of Tinchebray to Argentan the US VII Corps and V Corps are attacking northward and trapped as meat in the sandwich are the divs of the German 7th Army and units of 5th Panzer Army and Panzer Group Eberbach. These forces are now beginning a desperate retreat to the east. Field Marshal von Kluge is forced to take cover from Allied air attacks for most of the day while attempting to visit the front. His long absence from HQ increases Hitler's supicions that von Kluge is disloyal and attempting to defect to the Allied side. He waits until twilight hidden in a cornfield, then manages to return to headquarters.

In Brittany, units of the 83rd Division enter Dinard, while the position of the German garrison at St Malo grows increasingly critical.

In the US 1st Army sector, units of the V Corps reach the hills that dominate Tinchebray from the south.

Eastern Front

In Lithuania the German Army Group North sends in counterattacks all along the line but especially against Siauliai. The aim is to prevent Riga being cut off and to eliminate the threat to its armies still in Estonia. Further south, the 3rd Belorussian Front reaches the border of East Prussia along the Sesupe River and begins to bombard German territory.

NORTHERN SECTOR

Fighting in Latvia intensifies as the 3rd Panzer Army throws more than 300 panzers and assault guns into the attack toward Riga. The 2nd Guards Army is hard pressed by the 3rd Panzer while the 51st is hit by elements of both the 3rd Panzer and 16th Armies. The 16th is continuing to attack south of Jelgava.

CENTRAL SECTOR

The 33rd Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front crosses the East Prussian border and gains a minor bridgehead across the Sesupe River.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

Italy

Plans for the offensive against the 'Gothic' Line are finalized.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

New Guinea

The American holdings near Aitape are extended by a general advance. Units of the US 43rd Division advance in all directions, meeting with enemy resistance only near the mouth of the Dandriwad River.

On Numfoor Island, after a long pursuit, the US 503rd Parachute Regiment finally succeeds in engaging and destroying the greater part of the tiny Japanese garrison. On Biak Island, too, Japanese resistance is almost exhausted.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

Northern France

The capture of Falaise is completed by the Canadian 2nd Division. The damage to the town in the bombing and bitter fighting of the past few days has been so severe that in many places it is impossible to tell where the streets once were. The gap between the Canadian front to the north and the US V Corps to the south through which the units of the German 5th Panzer Army and 7th Army can escape encirclement is reduced to a minimum. But during the previous night, without asking Hitler's authority, von Kluge orders the withdrawal of the units of those 2 armies which are in the pocket between Falaise and Argentan.

Hitler dismisses Field Marshal von Kluge. Walther Model is appointed in his place. Von Kluge is suspected of being involved in the bomb plot to kill Hitler of which he had practically no knowledge, but he had been involved with the Allies on armistice negotiations. Von Kluge commits suicide on Aug 18 rather that face a treason trial.

In Brittany, the garrison of the St Malo citadel surrenders to the Americans of the 83rd Division, VIII Corps. To the south and west of these battles the American advance into the heart of France continues. Dreux, Charteaudun and Orleans are taken.

    • 1 Halifax and 1 Lancaster are lost.
  • 122 Halifaxes, 18 Lancasters and 4 Mosquitos of Nos. 6 and 8 Groups attack Connantre located between Paris and Reims. The target is a railway station and yards 70 miles east of Paris. The Pathfinder marking is accurate and the damage to the target area is severe. This raid marks the end of a long series of raids on the Belgian and French railway systems.
    • There are no losses.
  • 108 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitos of Nos. 1 and 8 Groups attack the oil depot and storage tanks at Ertvelde Reime to the north of Ghent. Severe damage is caused to the targets.

The Germans maintain their powerful counterattack in the area of Siauliai, in Lithuania. The 1st Baltic Front is only just able to resist the German onslaught. In the north troops of the 3rd Baltic and the Leningrad Fronts advance north and south of Lake Peipus. In southern Poland Sandomierz, on the west bank of the Vistula, is taken by the 1st Ukraine Front.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Northern France

Allied troops continue to advance westward toward the Seine. During the night the rearguards of Gen Paul Hausser's 7th Army manage to withdraw to the east bank of the Orne River.

At Chambois, between Falaise and Argentan, units of the Canadian II Corps coming from the north join up with advance guards of the US XV Corps, closing the so-called Falaise gap. A considerable German force is still to the west. The German retreat through the Falaise gap in the past few days has provided unrivalled opportunities for the Allies fighter-bombers since there has been an enormous amount of vulnerable traffic compelled to travel by day on virtually one road.

In 3rd Army's advance toward the Seine forward patrols reach Versailles.

Field-Marshal von Kluge commits suicide. Once the architech of so many German victories, but now deprived of his command and suspected of being involved in the attempt on Hitler's life, von Kluge takes his own life at Metz rather than be hauled before a People's Court. He leaves a letter for Hitler, in which he writes among other things: 'I do not know whether Field-Marshal Model will be able to restore the position. I hope so with all my heart. But if not, and if your new weapons, in which such burning faith is placed, do not bring success, then, mein Führer, take the decision to end the war. The German people have suffered such unspeakable ills that the time has come to put an end to these horrors.'

Eastern Front

After a fierce artillery preparation during the night a major Soviet offensive begins in the south with two main attacks near Jassy and Tiraspol. It is a massive undertaking involving 939,000 Red Army troops, 1,400 tanks and 1,700 aircraft. Malinovsky's 2nd Ukraine Front advance south around Jassy and Tolbukhin's 3rd Ukraine Front southwest from Tiraspol. Their attacks fall on the 3rd and 4th Romanian Armies and the German 6th Army which in fact contains many Romanian troops. At the same time the Romanians turn on the Germans, seizing the bridges over the Danube and Prut Rivers, effectively trapping 16 German divisions. These forces are all part of Gen Johannes Freissner's Army Group South Ukraine. In the north in Latvia the Russian attacks also continue fiercely. The fire of the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen helps beat off one important Russian advance near Riga.

ROMANIA

The Soviet Jassy-Kishinev Offensive begins. The 2nd Ukrainian Front launches a devastating assault on the Romanian 4th Army, the IV and VI Corps being shattered. The Soviet 52nd Army crashes into the junction between the German IV and Romanian IV Corps at Jassy, while the 27th Army pummels the Romanian VI Corps. Soon the Romanians are fleeing and the Soviet 53rd Army is inside Jassy.

The 3rd Ukrainian Front enjoys similar success. XXX and XXIX Corps are attacke by the Soviet 37th, 46th and 57th Armies and, following heavy fighting are put to flight. The Soviet 5th Shock Army attacks LII Corps at Kishinev as an assault by the 13th Panzer Division fails.[MORE]

Northern France

All the Allied armies begin a rapid advance to the northeast in pursuit of the broken and retreating German forces. The Canadian II Corps is advancing in the north toward Rouen, the British XIX and XXX Corps and American XV Corps in the center to the north of Paris and the American V, XX and XII Corps south of the French capital. In the area of Mantes-Gassicourt the US 79th Division of XV Corps widens its bridgehead across the Seine. In the south the US 4th Armored Division enters Sens. Although at this stage, the invasion of France is behind the schedule set out in the OVERLORD plan, this will be corrected by the speed of the advance in the next few weeks.

Field Marshal Model informs Berlin the German 7th Army is no longer an effective fighting force. The 7th, as well as the 5th Panzer and 15th Armies, had adhered to Hitler's orders to stand and fight. Instead of withdrawing and re-grouping, the Germans suffered enormous losses while obeying Hitler and exposed the entire western front.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The 6th Tank Army pushes down from the north, behind the main units of the 6th Army to the east, toward Vaslui and Husi. With the complete collapse of the Romanian armies, Gen Johannes Friessner cuts the Romanians out of the command chain, allocating Gen Friedrich Meith's IV and the XXIX Corps to the 6th Army. Fierce battles rage south of Jassy as the IV Corps falls back to the southeast toward the Prut. Kastuleni and Ungeny fall to 52nd and 4th Guards Armies as they drive along either bank of the river. To the east, elements of the XXIX Corps are involved in heavy fighting at Romanovo as the 46th Army plunges deep into the German rear. The XXIX Corps is now in full retreat toward the Prut. While the corps retreats, other elements of the 46th Army reach the Black Sea coast and isolate the 9th Infantry Division.

Northern France

The resistance forces have, for the moment, largely freed Paris after a bitter struggle. The French Forces of the Interior (FFI) under Gen Marie Pierre Koenig and Paris civilians free the French capital. Since August 19 when Koenig announced a general uprising against the Germans in Paris, there has been bitter fighting in the city, finally leaving it in the hands of the patriots.

The French 2nd Armored Division of the American V Corps begins to move towards Paris along two center lines in support of the final assault on the city by the FFI. The US 4th Division captures Arpajon, south of Paris.

The 30th Division of the US XIX Corps enters Evreux, while further north units of the 2nd Armored Division capture Le Neubourg and press on toward Elbeuf.

Deauville on the Channel coast is taken by the Allies, led by Belgian troops.

In the American 3rd Army sector the 79th Division of XV Corps maintains firm control of its bridgehead at Mantes-Gassicourt, north of Paris, while the 5th Division of XX Corps takes Fontainebleau and the 7th Armored Division approaches Melun.

Romania, Politics

There is a Coup d'etat in Bucharest. The pro-German premier, Ion Antonescu, conducator of Romania since 1940, is deposed and arrested. King Michael I asks the moderate Constantin Sanatescu to form a government, and on the same day he orders the cessation of hostilities against the Red Army and accepts the unconditional surrender demanded by Moscow. At the same time he allows the Germans to leave his country unmolested. On August 25 Romania declares war on Germany. There is fighting near Bucharest.

The French 9th Colonial Division and 1st Division of II Corps penetrate into the suburbs of Toulon and advance resolutely toward the city center. Units of the 3rd Algerian Division and the 1st Armored Division break into the outskirts of Marseilles from north and east. The German garrison there rejects a demand to surrender by the French headquarters.

Daylight Ops:
  • 140 Halifaxes, 16 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitos attack 5 launch or storage sites in the Pas de Calais. The results are varied.
    • 2 Halifaxes and 1 Lancaster are lost.
Evening Ops:
  • 412 Lancasters of Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 8 Groups are sent to hit the Opel motor factory at Rüsselsreim. The Pathfinder marking is accurate and the raid is over in 10 minutes. An official German report says that the forge and the gearbox assembly departments were put out of action for several weeks, but 90 per cent of the machine tools in other departments escaped damage. The assembly line and part of the pressworks were able to recommence work 2 days later and truck assembly was unaffected because of considerable stocks of ready-made parts.
    • 15 Lancasters are lost.
  • 190 Lancasters and 6 Mosquitos are sent to Darmstadt which has not been seriously attacked by Bomber Command to this point in the war. The 'No. 5 Group method' raid is a failure. The Master Bomber has to return early and his 2 deputies are shot down. The flares are dropped too far west and the low-level Mosquito marker aircraft can not locate the target. 95 buildings are hit and 8 people are killed by the few bombs that do hit Darmstadt. 33 of the Lancasters bomb other targets including at least 13 planes which join in the successful raid on nearby Rüsselsreim.
    • 7 Lancasters are lost.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Daylight Ops:
  • 216 Halifaxes of No. 4 Group and 14 Mosquitos and 13 Lancasters of No. 8 Group are sent on a historic raid to Homberg, the first major raid by Bomber Command to Germany in daylight since since August 12, 1941 when 54 Blenheim attacked the power station at Cologne. This raid is escorted by 9 squadrons of Spitfires on the outward flight and 7 squadrons on the return. 1 Me-110 is seen, but the Spitfires drove it off. There is intense flak over the target but no bombers are lost. The target is the Rheinpreussen synthetic oil refinery at Meerbeck. The bombing is based on Oboe marking but 5-8/10ths cloud produces difficult conditions, though some accurate bombing is claimed through gaps in the clouds.
  • The RAF raid on the Homberg-Meerbeck oil plant is the first large-scale daylight operation by Bomber Command over Germany since the early months of the war. Although Mosquito bombers have often made daylight attacks before this, the employment of the slower, more vulnerable heavy bombers shows the extent of the air superiority which has been established by the long-range fighters.

Air Operations, Europe

90 out of 97 V-1s directed against London are destroyed by the defenses. Most are brought down by AA shells with proximity fuses. The launch sites for these flying bombs are rapidly being captured by the advancing Allied troops in northern France. The Germans will soon resort to using He-111s as flying launch ramps.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Daylight Ops:
  • 150 aircraft including 77 Halifaxes, 48 Lancasters and 25 Mosquitos, carry out small 'Oboe leader' raids on 12 flying bomb sites. Most of the targets are satisfactorily hit. This is the last in a long series of attacks on flying bomb sites in the Pas de Calais area. This area will captured by Allied ground troops in a few days. There is 1 aircraft casualty. A No. 550 Squadron Lancaster, which had just bombed the Wemars/Cappel launch site near Amiens, receives a direct hit from a flak battery near Dunkirk. The Lancaster goes down in flames and explodes. The pilot, Pilot Officer S. C. Beeson, and 3 other members of the crew escape by parachute, but the wireless operator and the 2 gunners are killed. Sergeants J. K. Norgate, H. S. Picton and J. A. Trayhorn are thus the last fatal casualties in Bomber Command's campaign against the V-1 flying bomb.
  • 30 aircraft of Nos. 6 and 8 Groups bomb a German battery on the Île de Cezembre, near St Malo, and 23 Halifaxes of No. 6 Group bomb ships in Brest harbor.

Air Operations, Europe

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
  • 402 Lancasters and 1 Mosquito of Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 8 Groups are sent to Stettin. The raid is successful hitting parts of Stettin that had not been hit on previous raids.
    • 23 Lancasters are lost.
  • 189 Lancasters of No. 5 Group carry out one of the most successful No. 5 Group raids of the war on Königsberg at extreme range. Only 480 tons of bombs are carried because of the range of the target, but severe damage is caused around the 4 separate aiming points selected. This success is achieved despite a 20 minute delay in opening the attack because of the presence of low cloud. The bombing force waited patiently, using up precious fuel, until the marker aircraft found a break in the clouds and the Master Bomber, Wing Commander J. Woodroffe, probably No. 5 Group's most skilled Master Bomber, allows the attack to commence. Bomber Command estimates that 41 per cent of all the housing and 20 per cent of all the industry in Königsberg are destroyed.
    • There is heavy fighter opposition over the target and 15 Lancasters, 7.9 per cent of the force, are lost.
Other Ops:
  • Support and 93 training aircraft make a diversionary sweep over the North Sea, 53 Mosquitos are sent to Berlin, Hamburg and 4 other targets, 31 Lancasters and 12 Halifaxes lay mines off the Baltic ports, 8 aircraft are on Resistance operations, and there are 49 Mosquito patrols and 35 RCM sorties.

Eastern Front

The Russians of the 3rd Ukraine Front take the important Black Sea port of Constanta. Buzau, east of Ploesti, also falls. The German Army Group South Ukraine is ordered to hold the Carpathian Mountains and the Transylvanian Alps.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The 6th Army is exhausted and after a last effort to break through Group Meith (Gen Friedrich) is destroyed. More than 106,000 men have been captured and 150,000 killed during the fighting, wiping the 6th Army off the German order of battle. Army Group South Ukraine also loses 850 tanks, 3,500 artilleryy pieces and 35,000 motor vehicles during the battle.

Constanta falls to the 57th Army and Buzau to the 46th Army as Soviet forces close upon Bucharest and Bulgaria. The Balkan offensive has cost the 2nd Ukrainian Front 7,000 killed and 32,000 wounded and the 3rd Ukrainian 5,800 killed and 21,000 wounded.

Units of the British XXX Corps leads the Allied columns in the northern sector, making for Amiens with the object of crossing the Somme. To the southeast, the US 3rd Armored Division crosses the Aisne River east of Soissons on the way to Laon. The American 5th Division, XX Corps, enters Rheims. Southeast of Rheims units of XII Corps, 3rd Army, take Chalons-sur-Marne.

In Brittany, resolute defense by the German troops still holds up the efforts of the American VIII Corps to take Brest.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr2]

Occupied Czechoslovakia

The Germans move to occupy the puppet state of Slovakia, sparking off a long-planned Slovak national uprising. The Slovaks hold central Slovakia throughout September but SS units force them to retire into the Low Tatra Mountains in October.

The British XXX Corps reaches Amiens and crosses the Somme River. In the American XX Corps sector the 7th Armored Division succeeds in establishing a bridgehead across the Meuse near Verdun. In Britain the operations ov the VIII Corps against Brest are temporarily suspended. The Meuse is also crossed by units of the 4th Armored Division of XII Corps which establish a bridgehead in the vicinity of Commercy. Since D-Day, German losses are staggering. In a 3-month period total losses on the eastern and western fronts are 1,200,000 dead, wounded and missing. 50 divisions have been destroyed in the east and 28 in the west. In addition, 230,000 German troops are surrounded in pockets in France. Together with the defection of 2 Romanian armies and the Bulgarians to the Russians, the German High Command faces its bleakest outlook of the war. Berlin is further vexed by the presence of 555 Soviet divisions advancing from the east.
