Air Operations, EuropeThe US heavy-bomber forces concentrate on two target systems this month. Communications centers are attacked including Coblenz and Bingen. The effort on December 11 is particularly great with the targets being Giessen, Hanau and Frankfurt. The other range of targets is in the oil industry. Plants in Silesia and near Vienna are hit as are Harburg and Meiderich. On December 24 8th Air Force sends 2,000 bombers on missions. The Allied Air Forces based in Italy contribute to these attacks as well as hitting targets on their own front and harrying the German retreat in Yugoslavia with bombing and arms drops to resistance forces. RAF Bomber Command drops 48,700 tons during the month. One third of the operations are made during the days and targets are throughout Germany. Transport and oil systems are again favored targets. Hagen, Essen, Trier, Leuna and Poolitz are all hit.
|
Light and heavy forces of both British and American Air Forces also attack transport centers and troop concentrations during the German Ardennes attacks when weather permits. Altogether 35,500 tons are dropped in these operations.Air Operations, PacificUS Superfortress bombers continue and extend their strategic bombing campaign from their bases in China and Saipan. Tokyo is attacked on 4 occasions during the month, Nagoya 3 times and Omura, Yokohama and Yokosuka once. Outside Japan targets include Mukden, Shanghai and Nanking. |
Pacific, Naval WarThe American submarine fleet and mining campaign has now reduced the carrying capacity of the Japanese merchant fleet. The carrying capacity is now less than half the total possible at the beginning of the war. Food and oil imports from the East Indies are now down to a trickle. The US action on Leyte has followed three broad lines of advance: through the north of Leyte up the Leyte Valley; across the center toward Ormoc then northwest up the Ormoc Valley; and directly southward following the coastlines. Fighting is heavy, but the US soldiers are making steady progress. The plight of Gen Sosaku Suzuki's 35th Army on Leyte is desperate, especially now the fall of Ormoc has cut his troops off from naval supply. Battle of the BulgeThe Germans begin a major offensive in the Ardennes. The Ardennes battle is often popularly styled the Battle of the Bulge. The attack begins with a short, sharp artillery barrage along the chosen front between Monshau and Trier. Almost complete surprise is achieved. Allied intelligence has received some indications of the attack despite elaborate security on the German side but these signs have not been interpreted properly. Partly because of the enforced shortening of their front the Germans have been able to assemble a considerable reserve of armored divisions. They have chosen to strike here with the immediate aim of retaking Antwerp and splitting the British and American armies in two. In the longer term Hitler hopes to discourage and divide the British and Americans politically so that forces can be switched to the Eastern Front, perhaps even with help from anti-communist leaders who may emerge in Britain and America. Altogether the Germans have assembled 24 divisions, including 10 armored. These forces are distributed largely between Sepp Dietrich's 6th SS Panzer Army and Hasso von Manteuffel's 5th Panzer Army. On the flanks of the attack are 15th and 7th Armies. |
All these forces are part of Walter Model's Army Group B. Gerd von Rundstedt has been brought back to have overall charge of the operation. To oppose the German forces are about 6 American divisions from V and VIII Corps consisting partly of inexperienced troops and partly of resting veterans. The terrain here in the same Ardennes area, as was chosen for the start of the attack in 1940, is fairly rugged with many defiles and much heavily wooded country. Most of whatever movement is attempted must take place on the few major roads so, as will emerge, it is vital to seize the various junctions. The Germans hope to spread confusion in the American rear areas by infiltrating small groups of specially trained English-speaking troops with captured uniforms and equipment to perform sabotage and intelligence missions. This move is very successful at least in causing an atmosphere of suspicion and uncertainty. Many roadblocks and checkpoints are set in the American rear areas and they do something to hinder the movement of reserves. The Germans are relying on bad weather to keep the Allied air forces grounded and for the moment this hope is fulfilled. |
In the first day of the attack the Germans succeed in disrupting the Allied front and make good ground in many sectors. The 95th Division continues to extend its bridgehead at Saarlautern. During the night its units begin to be relieved by the 5th Division. The area between the XX and XII Corps is allocated to the II Corps. The XII Corps continues its attacks against the outer defenses of the Siegfried Line, but these are suspended when news is received of the German offensive in the Ardennes. In the south, the VI Corps, US 7th Army, sends its divisions forward toward the German frontier. [ | ] |

Montgomery is appointed for the northern units and Bradley for the southern. This arrangement will not be made public until January 5, 1945. On the ground the Germans have reached the Stavelot and Houffalize areas but between these advances some of the US forces are holding their ground around Gouvy and St Vith. Houffalize itself will be defended a little longer by 82nd Airborne Division while 10 miles to the south 101st Airborne is among the force which is preparing to hold the important road junction at Bastogne. [ | ]Western FrontOn the northern flank of their Ardennes offensive the German forces attack northward from around Stavelot but, although they quickly make some gains, they are soon forced to retire. The units on the right of these in the German drive have not made much ground toward their objectives around Malmedy and to the north. The two vital junctions at St Vith and Bastogne are still being held despite deeper penetrations all around these towns. If the Germans are to develop their offensive much farther they must do so quickly before the weather clears and before the Allied reserves arrive in force. To the generals it is clear that there is no question of reaching the grand objective of Antwerp. Although St Vith is taken late in the day this does not come close to curing the problems of delay that have been created.
