Air Operations, Europe

American heavy bombers drop 30,000 tons of bombs on a selection of targets including Berlin (see March 6-8), Brunswick, Friedrichshafen, French airfields and V-weapons sites. RAF Bomber Command makes over 8,000 sorties, including 4 1,000-bomber raids during which 27,000 tons of bombs are dropped. Objectives include Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Berlin, Essen, Nuremberg (see March 30-31) and rail targets in France for OVERLORD. US and British medium and fighter bombers attack targets in occupied territory.

The Mediterranean air forces also hit rail targets in northern Italy.

During daylight on 5 days during the first 16 days of March, 2 RAF Bomber Command Oboe Mosquitos act as 'formation leaders' for bomber units of the 2nd Tactical Air Force attacking flying-bomb sites. The formation bombs as soon as it sees the bombs of the Oboe Mosquito being released. There are no losses from these sorties.

BURMA
  • At the start of Operation THURSDAY—what will be a massive offensive in Burma—USAAF light cargo aircraft of the 10th Air Force’s provisional, composite No. 1 Air Commando (formerly the 5318th Air Unit) airlift a 2-brigade British Army deep-penetration force (known as 'Chindits’) to landing zones in central Burma, 50 miles east of Indaw and far behind Japanese Army lines. Following a combat jump by US Army engineers, who clear a landing ground known as Broadway, 32 of 67 troop and cargo gliders sent deliver 539 ground troops, 3 mules, and 65,972 pounds of cargo (including several bulldozers). The gliders that abort (because a second landing ground has been blocked by Japanese Army ground troops) all return safely to their bases. By nightfall, the first of 62 fully laden C-47s are able to land at a newly created runway at Broadway. And during the night, a second landing zone is used by a dozen troop-laden gliders.
  • 490th Medium Bomb Squadron B-25s and 10th Air Force P-51s, P-40s, and A-36s mount more than 60 effective sorties throughout the day against Japanese Army ground troops, dumps, a bridge, and road targets around Myitkyina, Shingban, and Zigon.

  • 207 IX Bomber Command B-26s attack V-weapons sites around St.-Omer and Abbeville.
  • 219 2nd Bomb Division B-24s are dispatched against three Luftwaffe airdromes in France, but cloud cover over the targets forces 164 to attack four other airdromes, and the rest abort.
  • Escort for the B-24s is provided by 307 USAAF fighters. VIII Fighter Command escort pilots down 16 Luftwaffe aircraft over France between 1130 and 1305 hours.
    • 5 USAAF fighters are lost with 4 pilots, 3 are lost in operational accidents with 1 pilot

Burma

The 77th Long Range Penetration Brigade (LRP) under Gen Orde Wingate is flown in to the landing area named 'Broadway', 50 miles southwest of Myitkyina. A second Chindit Brigade, 16th LRP, has been on the march south from Ledon since February 5th heading for the 'Aberdeen' area. In the northeast, the 66th Regiment of the Chinese 22nd Division surrounds and captures Maingkwan. On their left flank, the US troops of Merrill's Marauders cross the Tanai River and tak Walabaum, only about 60 miles from Myitkyina. The battle for Walabaum is ferocious, with troops of the Japanese 18th Division making suicidal bayonet charges, while US and Chinese troops often go without food for 24-hour periods. But losses among Allied soldiers are relatively light.

Adm Mountbatten asks for Chinese and American reinforcements for the Arakan sector, where he believes a big Japanese offensive is imminent.

In the Arakan the British XV Corps begins an offensive movement against the Maungdaw-Buthidaung road and towards the mouth of the Naaf River.

[larrlarr | rarrrarr2]

Eastern Front

The 1st Ukraine Front's attacks make rapid progress, fracturing Manstein's attenuated lines. The object of the offensive is to destroy the German forces in the great southern bend of the Dniepr. Izyaslav, Yampol and Ostropol in the Shepetovka sector are all taken.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

Gen Pavel Rybalko's 3rd Guards Tank Army and Gen Vasily Badanov's 4th Tank Army pass through the advancing 60th and 1st Guards Armies to break into the German rear. Yampol and Ostropol are quickly taken, leaving the LIX Corps scattered. Zbaraz falls to the 18th Army.

Konev's 2nd Ukrainian Front begins its attack against the 8th Army and 1st Panzer Army. Before Uman a rain of artillery fire hits the German line. After the bombardment the 5th Guards Army crashes into the right wing of the 8th Army. Once againe the weight of the Russian attack proves too great for the Germans, their forces collapsing after a bloody struggle. Koniev then commits the 2nd Tank and 5th Guards Tank Armies to the attack.

New Guinea

Two battalions of the US 126th Infantry Regiment from the 32nd Division with support units land without trouble at Yalau Plantation, 30 miles west of Saidor. There is almost no Japanese opposition. Australian forces converge on the north coast west of Saidor from inland. The Japanese avoid encirclement by withdrawing toward Madang.

Gen MacArthur, hoping to isolate the Japanese forces in New Guinea, presses on with plans for the invasion of Hollandia, New Guinea and of Kavieng, New Ireland.

Burma

The Chinese and Americans concentrate for the occupation of Walawbum where there are still substantial forces in the vicinity. About 2,000 Japanese are surrounded in the Hukawng Valley.

In Operation U-GO the 33rd Division of Lt-Gen Renya Mutaguchi's 15th Army launches a major offensive across the Chindwin River. The goal of the operation is to spoil any Allied offensive moves in central Burma by crossing into India, pushing Allied forces out of Burma in the process, cutting the Assam-Burma railway used for supplying Stilwell's Myitkyina offensive, and also occupying Imphal and Kohima and the flat territory between. The first part of the offensive involves the Japanese 33rd Division advancing out and cutting the Tiddim-Imphal Road, a major Allied supply route to Imphal, and trapping the 17th Indian Division based between Tiddim and Tongzang.

Burma

The Japanese offensive U-GO begins. The aim is to destroy the British forces around Imphal and Kohima and then push on through the passes to Dimapur, cutting off the Chinese and Americans in the north, and with the road to India ahead. 3 divisions of Gen Renya Mutaguchi's 15th Army are to be employed in the initial operations. The offensive begins with advances by Gen Motoso Yanagida's 33rd Division against the positions of Gen David T. Cowan's 17th Indian Division around Tiddim. These attacks are meant to commit the British reserves so that when the main attack goes in its task will be easier.

The British are well aware that the Japanese plan to attack, but they underestimate the strength of the force to be used. The plan is for the 17th and 20th Indian Divisions, both in fairly advance positions, to fall back to around Imphal and protect and live off the large base organization there. The British forces at this stage are all from Lt-Gen Sir Geoffrey Scoones' IV Corps. It is an essential part of the Japanese plan to capture large quantities of British supplies because most of their advances are to be made over jungle tracks impassable to supply vehicles. Food is the crucial element of the problem. It is precisely because of these difficulties that the British expect a smaller attack.

In the northeast a Chinese-American attack on Japanese units surrounded in the Walawbum area fails for lack of co-ordination. The Chinese-American armored group enters Walawbum but does not get the expected infantry support and has to withdraw.

The Finns reply to the Russian armistice terms asking for further guarantees. The principal difficulty is the Russian demand for the internment of German military personnel. This reply is rejected by the Russians on March 10.

Following secret meetings, the Finns reject the offer of a Soviet armistice on account of the harshness of Moscow's terms.

[larr2larr | rarrrarr2]

Eastern Front

Russian forces are now within 60 miles of Rumania.

FINNISH SECTOR

Following secret negotiations, the Finns reject a proposed armistice. The terms dictated by the Soviets are too harsh to accept. However, Finland continues its surreptitious dialogue with the Soviet Union.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The 5th and 7th Guards Armies push toward Pervomaisk, throwing the 8th Army back. Novy Bug falls to Group Pliev (Gen Issa) as the flank of the 6th Army is turned.

With the Ukrainian front in tatters, Hitler declares a number of towns to be fortified places. Local commanders are made responsible for their defense but usually have only meager resources with which to carry out their assignments. Hitler mistakenly believes that enough of these fortified places can break up the Russian advance and bring it to a grinding halt.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
  • 863 aircraft are sent to bomb Stuttgart. In this total are 617 Lancasters, 230 Halifaxes and 16 Mosquitos.
  • The bomber force flies over France nearly as far as the Swiss border before turning northeast for the approach to Stuttgart. This tactic delays the German fighters from contacting the bomber stream until just before the target is reached. Many air combats ensue. Adverse winds delay the opening of the attack and the same winds may have caused the Pathfinder marking to fall back well short of the target, despite the clear weather conditions. Some of the early bombing hits the center of Stuttgart but most falls in the open country southwest of the city. The Akademie is damaged in the center of Stuttgart and some houses are destroyed in the southwest suburbs.
    • 27 Lancasters and 10 Halifaxes are lost.
  • 140 aircraft including 94 Halifaxes, 38 Stirlings and 8 Mosquitos, attack the railway yards at Amiens.
    • 2 Halifaxes and 1 Stirling are lost.
  • 22 Lancasters of No. 5 Group are sent to an aircraft engine factory at Woippy, near Metz. Bombing is abandoned because of heavy cloud cover.
    • There are no losses.
Other Ops:
  • 17 Mosquitos are sent to 5 German targets and 10 to airfields in Holland, there are 2 RCM sorties, 11 Serrate patrols and 18 OTU sorties, 2 Stirlings lay mines off Trexel, and 31 aircraft are on Resistance operations.

  • During the afternoon, 7 366th Fighter Group P-47s conduct the 9th Air Force's first dive-bombing mission when they attack the St.-Valery-en-Caux Airdrome with one 250-pound bomb apiece.
US 15th AIR FORCE
ITALY:
  • In the largest air operation in the theater to date, more than 1,000 Allied warplanes level Monte Cassino monastery and nearby German Army defensive positions with 1,200 tons of bombs. The 12th and 15th Air Forces provide 275 heavy bombers and nearly 200 medium bombers, which drob more than 2,000 1,000-pound bombs. Although the Benedictine monastery is completely demolished, the ground attack fails.
  • Although no official start date is ever set, Allied warplanes in Italy effectively commence Operation STRANGLE, the aerial interdiction of the suppliy network in use by German Army forces in Italy. The wide-ranging operation will continue into late May and will eventually result in an 80 percent reduction in the German Army's ability to supply its combat divisions in Italy.

Burma

In the northeast the Chinese and Americans advance to within 3 miles of Jambu Bum Ridge. The main effort of the Japanese offensive begins in the northwest with crossings of the Chindwin by 15th and 31st Divisions in several places north of Tamu and south of Homalin. The Indian Army forces are at a disadvantage. Farther to the north, the Japanese 31st Division begins a three-pronged assault toward Kohima.

[larrlarr | rarrrarr2]

Eastern Front

Konev's forces have quickly crossed the Bug and now capture Vapnyarka cutting the Odessa-Zhmerinka rail line. Farther north near Vinnitsa Kalinkova falls to the Russians.

At this date the very long German front in the Soviet Union stretches from the Barents Sea, across Finland to Karelia; from the south shore of the Gulf of Finland, along the Narva and Lake Peipus, to the south, west of Vitebsk and Mogilev; then south, buttressed by the Pripet marshes, enters Poland and turns southeastward, following the line of the Bug, except for the salient recently opened by the Russians west of Uman, and down to the Black Sea west of Kherson. The German 17th Army has for some time been cut off in the Crimea. Thus the Wehrmacht has been driven back all the way to the line it held at the beginning of 1941, a few days after the invasion.

German troops mass along the Hungarian border, preparing to occupy the territory of their shaky ally.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The 6th Tank Army breaks out from its Bug bridgehead and takes Vapnyarka. Other elements of the front cut the railway line between Odessa and Zhmerinka near Vinnitsa.

[rarrrarr | rarrrarr]

Italy

Once more the Allied forces attack Cassino. The massive preliminary bombardment, lasting 5-1/2 hours, 1,400 tons of bombs from planes and 190,000 shells, is mostly directed against Cassino town. The New Zealand Division moves in to attack the town at 3:30pm with 4th Indian Division ready to follow up against the monastery. The advance of the Allied tanks is hampered by the mass of rubble created by the bombardment. The German Division is very tenacious and well directed, but nevertheless some gains are made by the attacks in the town and on the lower slopes of the mountain at Castle Hill and Hangman's Hill.

Meanwhile the Allies are preparing Operation STRANGLE, aimed at 'strangling' enemy movements in their rear areas so as to prevent supplies from reaching the front. With the return of fine weather British and American aircraft bomb and machine-gun streets, bridges, railways and stations and every form of transport used by the enemy behind the lines; all this in addition to the normal bombing of towns and factories in central north Italy. The Germans are only able to move by night, so that very few reinforcments and supplies can reach the front line.

Chindit troops cut the Mandalay-Myitkyina rail link just north of the vital Japanese supply base at Indaw, thereby making Japanese resupply of the retreating 18th Division extremely difficult. However, Japanese progress in the Imphal offensive means that many Allied troops are now being redirected away from the Myitkyina offensive.

Italy

The heavy fighting around Cassino continues but the Allied forces can make no progress either in the town or on the slopes leading to the monastery against the determined defense of the German 1st Paratroop Division. The Germans launch a powerful counterattack and drive the Allied troops back on to the positions they held on March 14.

Faced with this new blow, Churchill complains to Alexander, asking him if he does not think it would be better to break off the attacks against the valley in front of the abbey of Monte Cassino and concentrate on a move to get behind the enemy. 'About five of six divisions have been worn out going into these jaws,' comments the British prime minister sourly.

In his reply Alexander attributes the Allies' lack of success entirely to the courage of the German soldiers: 'The tenacity of these German paratroops is quite remarkable . . . I doubt if there are any other troops in the world who could have stood up to it and then gone on fighting with the ferocity they have.'

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
  • 846 aircraft are sent to Frankfurt. In this total are 620 Lancasters, 209 Halifaxes and 17 Mosquitos.
  • The German fighter force is again split. Part of it is lured north by the Heligoland mining operation, but the rest waits in Germany and meets the bomber stream just before the target area. Heavy cloud make it difficult for these fighters to have much success. The Pathfinders mark the target accurately and this leads to heavy bombing of the eastern, central and western districts of Frankfurt. The later phases of the bombing are scattered, but this is almost inevitable with such a large force. And, newer crews are usually allocated to the final waves.
    • 12 Halifaxes and 10 Lancasters are lost.
  • 17 Mosquitos are sent to airfields in Holland, Belgium and France, 12 Mosquitos are sent to Aachen, Dortmund and Duisburg, 98 aircraft are involved in the Heligoland mining diversion, 11 Mosquitos are on a diversionary raid to Kassel, there are 4 RCM sorties, 13 Serrate patrols and 18 OTU sorties, and 8 aircraft are involved in Resistance operations. 19 Lancasters of No. 5 Group, including 13 from 617 squadron, make an accurate raid on an explosives factory at Bergerac, France. There are no losses on these operations and the Serrate Mosquitos claim 3 Ju-88s destroyed.
  • In the heaviest air raid of the war so far, 1,000 RAF bombers make a devastating night raid on Frankfurt (Hamburg?), dropping 3,000 tons of bombs.
US 8th AIR FORCE
GERMANY:
  • 284 1st Bomb Division B-17s attack aircraft-industry targets at Oberpfaffenhofen and the Landsberg, Lechfelc, and Mimmingen Airdrome.
  • 198 2nd Bomb Division B-24s attack aircraft-industry targets around Friedrichshafen.
  • 198 3rd Bomb Division B-17s attack Munich and other targets of opportunity in the Munich area.
    • 15 B-17s and 28 B-24s are downed, 4 heavy bombers are written off; 10 crewmen killed, 22 wounded, 438 missiong
  • Escort and support is provided by a record 925 USAAF fighters, including 261 from the 9th Air Force. USAAF escort pilots down 38 Luftwaffe aircraft over Germany and eastern France between 1230 and 1630 hours.
    • 13 escorts are lost with 12 pilots, 3 are written off
US 12th AIR FORCE
ITALY:
  • 12th Air Force B-25s and B-26s, and XII Air Support Command A-20s attack the rail line at Colleferro, the marshalling yard at Foligno, a rail bridge, and marshalling yards at Orvieto, the port area at Piombino, a rail bridge at Poggibonsi, and an assembly area north of the Anzio beachhead.
  • XII Air Support Command A-36s, P-40s, and P-47s attack tactical targets in and around the Anzio battle area, troop concentrations near Cassino, and various rail and road targets.
US 15th AIR FORCE
ITALY:
  • Responding to reports that as many as 235 Luftwaffe fighters have returned to the Udine Airdrome complex in northeastern Italy, 15th Air Force planners conceive a brilliant plan to eradicate them. First, 95 P-38s strafe lines of supply and communication in northeastern Italy and conduct a sweep over the Udine-Villaorba area, an operation that holds most Luftwaffe fighters in the area on the ground. Next, 113 B-17s make a feint toward southern Germany ay of the Yugoslav coast, a move that draws up Luftwaffe fighers based at the Kagenfurt and Graz Airdromes, in southern Austria. These B-17s next turn sharply west, which in turn draws the Luftwaffe interceptor force toward northeastern Italy. The B-17s drop 20-pound fragmentation bombe on the Udine and Villaorba Airdromes at 1013 hours, and the USAAf fighters in the area attack the Luftwaffe fighters out of Graz and Klagenfurt. As the B-17s and all the USAAF fighters leave the area, the Luftwaffe fighters must land at the Udine area's three undamaged airfields to rearm and refuel. As the Luftwaffe fighters are being serviced at the Gorizia, Lavariano, and Maniago satellite fields, those bases are bombed between 1059 and 1111 hours, respectively, 72, 67, and 121 B-24s, which sow 32,370 20-pound fragmentation bombs that destroy or damage 56 Luftwaffe aircraft on the ground. In the air between 0925 and 1005, 15th Air Force P-38 and P-47 pilots down 17 Luftwaffe aircraft.
    • The cost to the 15th Air Force, in the course of 406 heavy bomber and 168 fighter sorties: 7 bombers, 4 fighters
  • In addition to attacks on the airdromes, 15th Air Force P-38s and P-47s attack a tanker in Mariano Lagoon, destroy 6 seaplanes at Belvedere, and attack two trains and two rsilroad stations.

In Operation MARGARETE I the Germans move into Hungary to prevent a collapse and ensure a line of retreat for their forces and continued access to the oil resources. It is also to forestall Hungarian attempts to make peace with the Allies. Prime Minister Miklos Kallay resigns and Dome Sztojay, the Ambassador in Berlin, forms a collaborationist government.

Ever since the Hungarian Army suffered huge losses around Stalingrad in early 1943, Hungary has been a lukewarm member of the Axis. Indeed, from April 1943 Premier Miklos Kallay has committed only a small number of poorly armed troops to the Axis war effort. Hitler has received reports proving that Hungary has been clandestinely dealing with the enemy and, in mid-March, learned from agents in Budapest that Kallay was advocating the sabotage of German military trains running through Hungary to Manstein's and von Kleist's army groups on the Eastern Front. In view of all these things, and fearing that Hungary might conclude a separate peace, Hitler has ordered the occupation of Hungary and will force the government to increase its contribution to the war effort. Kallay flees to Turkey. Dome Sztojay, a pro-Nazi, becomes the new prime minister. His government will jail political leaders, dissolve the unions and resume the deportation of Hungarian Jews to the death camps.

It also looks as if Rumania is about to collapse in the face of the Russian advance and the BBC warns the Rumanian people that the hour of defeat is about to strike.

In the Monte Cassino sector a German counterattack fails to recapture Height 193, but the Allies advance slows down. The fighting is ferocious, although during one episode, reminiscent of ancient chivalry, both sides agree to a 2 hours' truce to allow the dead and wounded to be carried off the battlefield. The Allies lend their stretchers to the Germans and give chocolate to wounded men and stretcher-bearers.

Air Operations, Europe

  • 8th Air Force bombs Berlin.
RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
  • 816 aircraft are sent to Frankfurt. Included in this total are 620 Lancasters, 184 Halifaxes and 12 Mosquitos.
  • Again, an indirect route is employed, this time crossing the Dutch coast north of the Zuider Zee and then flying almost due south to Frankfurt. This, and the Kiel minelaying diversion, confuse the Germans for some time. Hannover is forecast as the main target. Only a few fighters eventually find the bomber stream. The marking and bombing are accurate and Frankfurt suffers another heavy blow. Reports from the ground show that the damage is even more severe than in the raid carried out 4 nights earlier. Half of the city is without gas, water and electricity 'for a long period'. All parts of the city are hit but the greatest weight of the attack falls in the western districts. The report particularly mentions severe damage to the industrial areas along the main road to Mainz.
    • 26 Lancasters and 7 Halifaxes are lost.
  • 20 Mosquitos are sent to attack night-fighter airfields, 128 Halifaxes and 18 Stirlings lay mines in Kiel Bay and off Denmark, 22 Mosquitos are on diversionary and harassing raids to Berlin, Dortmund, Hannover and Oberhausen, 20 OTU Wellingtons make leaflet flights over France, and there are 16 RCM sorties and 16 Serrate patrols.

The Japanese Imperial Headquarters has already realized that it is only possible to carry out rearguard actions along the furthest defensive perimeter of their South Pacific empire, and that the Allied threat is now to the central Pacific, where they will have to concentrate all their available forces.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Battle of Berlin
Evening Ops:
  • 811 planes are sent to Berlin including 577 Lancasters, 216 Halifaxes and 18 Mosquitos. 53 aircraft are forces to abort.
  • The time over the target is 22:25-22:45. 2,493 tons of bombs are dropped including 1,070 tons of high explosives and 1,423 tons of incendiaries.
    • 44 Lancasters and 28 Halifaxes are lost on the raid. Aircrew casualties are 392 killed, 131 POWs and 4 evaders.
  • In supporting operations are 147 planes from training units sweeping across northern France, 11 Mosquitos 'spoof' raid at Kiel, 19 Oboe Mosquitos on night fighters fields in Holland, Belgium and France and 19 Serrate Mosquitos on Intruder patrols. 17 aircraft are involved in other operations with no losses.
    • 1 Serrate Mosquito is lost.
  • The main force takes off mid-evening. The wind out of the north turns out to be a long stronger that predicted. The navigators in the bombers doubt their calculations because of the wind strength. The night becomes known in Bomber Command as the 'night of the strong winds'. The bombers arrive at the Dutch coast well scattered and there the planes are given further inaccurate wind forecasts. Many try to correct their courses based upon their more accurate findings. As a result, the bomber stream never regains its concentration. Arriving over Berlin more than 700 aircraft are spread out over a frontage of at least 70 miles. The Berlin Flak and searchlights remain quiet and many aircraft fly past the city. Some begin orbiting the city waiting for the target time. The Aiming Point is at the eastern end of the Tiergarten with the intention of hitting the areas north and east of the city center. The Pathfinders are scattered just like the main force. The Target Indicators and Skymarkers blow rapidly across the target. The bomb loads are dropped somewhere.
  • A total of 126 communities outside of Berlin report bombs, mostly in the fields and woods outside the city. In the city 86 buildings are destroyed, 1,483 report damage. 30 people are killed and 141 injured. It is estimated that maybe half the bombs fall in Berlin, but every part of the city is hit from the very northern suburbs to the extreme south about 20 miles away. There are two areas of concentration, Horst Wessel in the north and a large area south and southwest of the center.
  • On the return flight the bombers are scattered over a frontage of more than 50 miles with the length of the stream being about 150 miles. About 740 planes emerge from the target area. 19 planes are shot down on the first 60 miles of the return route. A total of 56 bombers come down on the return flight from Berlin to the Dutch coast. 1 planes goes down in the sea, 2 crash in England and 1 ditches in a coastal minefield.
  • During the raid Flt-Sgt Nicholas Alkemade jumps, without a parachute, from a blazing RAF Lancaster 5,486 m (18,000 ft) above western Germany and lands safely in a snow drift.
  • Bomber Command totals for the Battle of Berlin in the 19 raids on the city include 10,813 planes dispatched with 9,560 reaching the target area. 33,390 tons of bombs have been dropped which include 17,214 tons of high explosive and 16,176 tons of incendiaries. Among the bomb totals are 6,811 4,000-pound 'Blockbusters' and 53 of the even bigger 8,000-pounders. The number of aircraft lost on the Berlin raids is 7% of Bomber Command's total wartime losses. 2,690 aircrew are killed in these raids.
  • US 8th AIR FORCE
    FRANCE:
    • 148 2nd Bomb Division B-24s attack the St.-Dizier/Robinson Airdrome, and 33 B-24s diverting from the Metz/Frescati Airdrome because of cloud cover attack the Nancy/Essay Airdrome. Escort is provided by two P-47 groups.
    GERMANY:
    • 60 1st Bomb Division B-17s attack the primary target, Schweinfurt, with 130 tons of bombs. 162 B-17s attack the secondary, Frankfurt am Main, with 382 tons of bombs.
      • There are no losses to enemy action, but 11 crewmen and 8 servicemen and 2 children on the ground are killed when a pathfinder B-17 crashes during a pre-mission flight. 2 B-17s crash after colliding near Schweinfurt.
    • Escort is provided by nearly 450 fighters from nine groups.

    • Beginning with a fighter sweep before dawn, US carrier aircraft from Task Force 58 and Task Group 50.15 open a three-day offensive against Japanese bases in the western Carolines, especially Angaur and Peleliu islands in the Palau Islands. The attack is in support of the upcoming invasion of Hollandia, New Guinea—to interdict air routes to New Guinea. RAF BOMBER COMMAND
    Evening Ops:
    • 795 aircraft are sent to Nuremberg. Included in this total are 572 Lancasters, 214 Halifaxes and 9 Mosquitos.
    • Nuremberg is a city deep in southern Germany with a heavily defended air space. Everything goes wrong. The route to the target is clear, no clouds to protect the bombers. The Germans carry out a near perfect Tame Boar operation. All the diversions the RAF puts up are ignored. The growing technical skill of the German night-fighter controllers and the new Lichtenstein airborne radar sets combine with German ability to track the RAF H2S and IFF transmissions in inflicting unacceptable punishment on the attacking force. The first fighters appear before the bombers reach the Belgian border and a fierce battle in the moonlight lasts for the next hour. 59 bombers are shot down in just one hour on the main long leg of the approach route. The target itself is covered with cloud and few bombers actually bomb the city. The air combat action is much reduced on the return flight when most of the fighter have to land.
    • Most of the returning crews report that they had bombed Nuremberg but subsequent research shows that approximately 120 aircraft had bombed Schweinfurt, 50 miles north-west of Nuremberg. This mistake is a result of badly forecast winds causing navigational difficulties. 2 Pathfinder aircraft actually drop markers at Schweinfurt. Much of the bombing in the Schweinfurt area falls outside the town and only 2 people are killed in that area. The main raid at Nuremberg is a failure. The city is covered by thick cloud and a fierce cross-wind which developed on the final approach to the target causes many of the Pathfinder aircraft to mark too far to the east. A 10-mile-long creepback also develops into the countryside north of Nuremberg. Both Pathfinders and Main Force aircraft are under heavy fighter attack throughout the raid. Little damage is caused in Nuremberg.
      • 64 Lancasters and 31 Halifaxes are lost in which 545 aircrew are killed, the biggest Bomber Command loss of the war. It is estimated that night fighters shoot down 79 aircraft. As a result long range area raids are suspended.
    Other Ops:
    • 49 Halifaxes lay mines in the Heligoland area, 13 Mosquitos are sent to night-fighter airfields, 34 Mosquitos are sent on diversionary raids to Aachen, Cologne and Kassel, and there are 5 RCM sorties and 19 Serrate patrols.
    • 3 Oboe Mosquitos are sent to Oberhausen where a bomb kills 23 Germans waiting to go into a public shelter, 1 Mosquito is sent to Dortmung, 6 Stirlings lay mines off Texel and Le Havre, 17 aircraft are involved in Resistance operations and there are 8 OTU sorties.
      • 1 Halifax dropping Resistance agents over Belgium is shot down.
Pilot Officer Cyril Barton, a Halifax pilot of No 578 Squadron, is awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for carrying on to the target in the Nuremberg operation after his bomber is badly damaged in a fighter attack and 3 members of his crew bale out through a communication misunderstanding. Although the navigator and wireless operator are among the men who had parachuted, Barton decides to attempt the return flight to England in spite of the fact that only 3 engines are running. An unexpected wind takes the Halifax steadily up the North Sea and it is short of fuel when the English coast is reached near Sunderland. Barton has to make a hurried forced landing when his engines fail through lack of fuel and he dies in the crash, but his 3 remaining crew members are only slightly hurt. Pilot Officer Barton's Victoria Cross is the only one awarded during the Battle of Berlin, which has now officially ended.

In the northeast the Chinese and Americans are under heavy pressure from the Japanese, who are determined to prevent Chinese forces from being sent across the Salween River to the Burma theater. The Allied situation is particularly serious in the Arakan sector and before Imphal, in India, where the Japanese 15th, 31st and 33rd Divisions under Gen Renya Mutaguchi are threatening both Imphal and Chittagong. The evacuation of civilians from New Delhi has begun. Some people fear that the British and Indian line may give way so that the Japanese can overrun the whole of the eastern part of the country. Mutaguchi has a contingent of nationalist Hindus serving under him, firmly on the Japanese side, with their creed of 'Asia for the Asians'.

Adm R. A. Spruance, recently promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the US 5th Fleet, leads 3 groups of TF 58, including 11 carriers, begins a 3-day assault on airfields, shipping, and military and port installations on the islands of Palau, Yap, Ulithi and Woleai. For the first time carrier-based aircraft drop mines during the battle. Over 104,000 tons of Japanese shipping are sunk. Among the Japanese ships lost are the repair ship Akashi, the oilers Ose, Sata, and Iro, submarine chasers Nos. 6 and 26, auxiliary submarine chasers Nos. 22 and 53, and patrol boat No. 31. The object of the action is not only to destroy the enemy, but to protect the coming invasion of Hollandia.

The Japanese have sighted the approaching Americans on March 25 and 26 and have therefore dispersed their warships. The battleship Musashi is hit by a submarine torpedo while moving away on March 28 however. Despite these precautions much ordinary shipping is hit. The operation continues through April 1.

    Eastern Front

In Bessarabia Russian troops of the 1st Ukraine Front take Chernovtsy. Russian forces are positioned 30 miles from the Ruthenian border.

Because of the Soviet victories in the Ukraine and for disregarding his 'stand fast' orders, Hitler is furious with his generals and dismisses Manstein and von Kleist from their commands of Army Groups North and South Ukraine. Model takes over from Manstein and Ferdinand Schörner from von Kleist. Gen Georg Lindemann takes Model's place at Army Group North.

Hitler, increasingly irritated by the continual retreats in the Ukraine, relieves both Manstein and von Kleist of their commands. Model is assigned to command Army Group North Ukraine (formerly Army Group South), and Ferdinand Schörner is assigned to command Army Group South Ukraine (formerly Army Group A). Gen Georg Lindemann replaces Model in command of Army Group North.

    SOUTHERN SECTOR

The 1st Tank Army captures Chernovtsy.

    GERMAN COMMAND

Having returned to the front followind their meeting with Hitler, Manstein and von Kleist are recalled to Obersalzburg where both are relieved of their commands. Hitler justifies his decision with the statement that the time for great strategic minds has passed, what the armies in the east need is men of National Socialist will. In their place Hitler appoints Field Marshal Model to command Army Group South and Field Marshal Schörner to Army Group A. At the same time the army groups are renamed, Army Group South becoming North Ukraine and a becoming Army Group South Ukraine. Just as with Army Group Don, Hitler names his army groups after territory that has already been lost. With Model leaving the northern sector for the Ukraine, Gen Georg Lindemann takes over Army Group North.
