Air Operations, EuropeThe USAAF heavy forces drop 55,700 tons of bombs this month. Many German planes are destroyed in the air and on the ground especially on November 2 and 27. The German railroad system also comes in for heavy punishment, Hamm, Coblenz and Saarbrucken being among the centers hit. The attack on oil production also continues. Leuna, Merseburg, Misburg and Gelsenkirchen are all targets for major raids. The British Bomber Command effort includes area attacks on Berlin, Hanover, Cologne, Essen and others as well as one particularly large attack on November 16 on Julich, Düren and Heinsburg which are almost obliterated in support of the American advance on the ground. The oil offensive is also a part of the British operation with Homberg and Castrop-Rauxel being among the targets. Altogether Bomber Command drops 53,000 tons. |
The lighter forces of both Allies provide copious escorts for the main bomber forces as well as performing tactical support missions and striking at V-weapon bases. Special RAF attacks breach the Dortmund-Ems and Mitteland canals which are important for the transport of industrial materials within Germany. This also hits at the continuing German efforts to build U-boats because the prefabricated sections that are now being used have been transported on these canals. RAF mining operations in the Baltic are also hindering U-boat training. |
Air Operations, PacificAmerican Superfortress bombers hit Tokyo and Omura each 3 times. Although these attacks do not yet compare in scale to those being undertaken in Europe, they are still causing considerable damage. Other targets for the bombers are Singapore, Nanking, Shanghai and Bangkok. (Allied Ships Lost to U-boats this month) |

PhilippinesOn Leyte in the US X Corps sector north of Ormoc, the Japanese renew their counterattacks on Kilay Ridge. They also counterattack east of Ormoc, in the central mountains, in the US XXIV Corps sector. The American troops contain their thrust. The US 511th Parachute Regiment starts on a difficult mountain march west from Burauen, toward Ormoc; their immediate objective is Mahonag, 10 miles from Burauen. 2 squadrons of aircraft carriers TG 38.2 commanded by Rear-Adm Gerald S. Bogan and TG 38.3 commanded by Rear-Adm Frederick Sherman again attack Luzon and the waters nearby. 7 American cruisers are involved and they sink the cruisers Kumano and Yasoshima. Two Japanese transports are also sunk in the attacks, Nos. 6 and 10. In return kamikaze attacks damage 4 of the carriers, the Essex (CV-9), the Hancock (CV-19), the Intrepid (CV-11) and the Cabot (CVL-28). After the naval defeat suffered in the Gulf of Leyte, it seems that the task of completing Operation SHO-GO has been taken over by the Japanese air force in the absence of the navy. Every aircraft still available is sent against the Americans; many of them are flown by kamikaze in daytime attacks on the US ships off Luzon. Damage is caused to the aircraft carriers Essex, Intrepid and Hancock and the light carrier Cabot. Another light carrier, the Independence (CVL-22), is damaged when an American aircraft explodes as it is coming in to land. PhilippinesOn Leyte the Japanese attack in force to recapture Kilay Ridge in the US X Corps sector. They succeed in taking some ground and in cutting off some American units. The US 12th Cavalry Regiment advances very slowly in the area of Mount Badian, about 5 miles northeast of the town of Kananga. As expected, the Japanese also attack toward Buri and Bayug airfields, but are held by the troops of the US XXIV Corps. [ | ]Western FrontThe first Allied convoy reaches Antwerp. During the time the German troops and mines have been cleared from the estuary much work has been done to put the quays and dock machinery in good order. There is still a problem, however, with transport for the stores once they have arrived. Nevertheless the opening of the port does totally alter the supply position of most of the Allied armies. There will be no more real shortages like those which limited the advance in the late summer. The German rocket attacks on the port do little to limit its capacity. While the advance of the VII and V Corps, US 1st Army, continues in the Inden River and Hürtgen forest sectors, units of the 95th Division, 3rd Army, cross the German frontier. The 101st Division, XII Corps, is despatched to Burbach to reinforce the 4th Armored Division east of the river Saar, about to advance toward the Saar-Union sector. The French 2nd Armored Division, VI Corps, US 7th Army, reaches the Erstein sector, about 10 miles southwest of Strasbourg, where the stubborn resistance of the German 19th Army brings it to a halt. Mohacs is also taken. In Albania the last German forces leave Scutari. The troops moved from this area are eventually able to link up with the German Army Group E, under Alexander Löhr, which is fighting to hold open a withdrawal route along the Drina and then the Drava. Following the evacuation from Albania and Serbia, and later Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Germans dig in on a line from Mostar to Visegrad to the Drina River. As the Russians penetrate into Hungary, this line has to be extended along the Drava. After a retreat lasting four and a half months, during which the Army Group covers 1,000 miles without suffering catastrophic losses despite the fierce battles fought with the partisans, the southern front is again stabilized, albeit temporarily, on Jan 13, 1945. THE OSTHEER Despite a rise in strength to 5,202 panzers (facing 14,000 Soviet tanks), the fuel situation throughout the Reich has reached catastrophic proportions. Significant elements of the Luftwaffe have been grounded and the mobile divisions of the army are forced to rely on horse drawn transportion. The Allied combined bomber offensive has wreaked havoc among oil production facilities and the capture of the Ploesti oilfields in Romania sever a major source of oil. Only Hungary's oilfields are left and are already threatened by the Soviet advance. German divisional strength stands as 21 panzer, 11 panzer grenadier and 107 infantry divisions.
