British Blenheim aircraft raid Aleppo airfield in Syria where Italian aircraft stand ready for action.

Battle of the Atlantic

  • The Danish steamer Skandia (1248t) is lost in the Kattegat on a mine in the minefield laid by the British submarine Seal on May 4th.
  • The German tanker Egerland (9789t) scuttles herself when she is intercepted by the British heavy cruiser London and the destroyer Brilliant in the south Atlantic. The crew of 94 is rescued.
  • U-48 sinks the British tanker Wellfield (6054t) in the mid-Atlantic with the loss of 8 crewmen.
  • The British coal hulk Himalaya (3540t) is sunk by German bombing at Portland.

China

In an air raid on Chungking, 700 Chinese are entombed and suffocate in a tunnel shelter.

Stampede Victims

The victims of a stampede caused by a panic during a Japanese air raid lie on a flight of stairs in Chongqing, June 5, 1941.

One of the worst bombings came on June 5, 1941, and lasted more than three hours. More than 2,500 Chongqing residents fled to shelter in one of the town center’s tunnels, the Jiaochangkou Tunnel. There they suffocated as they waited for the end of the assault.

  • Reinforcements, including some Australian troops, arrive in Cyprus.
  • In a gun battle off the coast of Libya the British submarine Taku sinks 3 Italian ships.

United States, Politics

The US Army Bill for 1942 is introduced into Congress. It calls for appropriations amounting to $10,400,000,000. It will be passed on June 28.
