Battle of the Atlantic - The German tanker Gedania is abandoned and scuttled when the British auxiliary cruiser Marsdale appears. Royal Navy personnel manage to get on board before the tanker sinks and capture secret material relating to the 'Enigma' cipher machine.
- The British steamer Queensbury (3911t) from convoy WN-36 is sunk by German bombing west of the Orkneys. 11 cremen are lost.
- The German tanker Esso Hamburg is scuttled when it is intercepted by the British heavy cruiser London and the destroyer Brilliant in the Freetown Natal Strait. The entire crew of 87 is rescued.
- The German supply ship Gonzenheim (4104t) is intercepted by the British battleship Rodney. The light cruiser Neptune boards her and she scuttles herself. 63 survivors are rescued by the Neptune and taken to Gibraltar.
- The German tanker Gedania (8923t) is captured in the North Atlantic by the British ocean boarding vessel Marsdale. The tanker is renamed Empire Garden and placed in British service.
- U-101 sinks the British steamer Trecarrell (5271t) in mid-Atlantic with the loss of 4 of her crew. 42 survivors are picked up by the British steam merchant Cornerbrook.
- The British dredger Robert Hughes (2879t) sinks on a mine in the mouth of the Lagos River. The mine was laid by U-69 on 27 May.

Iraq A new Iraqi Cabinet is formed under British auspices. British forces are now moving through the country establishing control of key points. Some of the British
troops will be ready to move into Syria later in the month.
