  • 15 341st Medium Bomb Group B-25s attack rail targets at Lohochai and Sinyang, and a textile mill at Chenghsien.

  • 24 90th Heavy Bomb Group B-24s attack rail facilities at Muongman.

During the night 9 9th Very Heavy Bomb Group B-29s sow mines in the Shimonoseki Strait and the Moji area. 1 B-29 is lost.

Air Operations, Philippines

V Bomber Command B-24s and A-20s, and V Fighter Command fighter-bombers attack targets and support US 6th Army ground forces throughout Luzon.

Air Operations, Ryukyus

  • US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft support US 10th Army ground forces on Okinawa and attack airfields in the Sakishima Islands. Naha, the capital of Okinawa, is captured by US 10th Army ground forces.
  • More than 100 Japanese aircraft based on Kyushu mount 56 separate small attacks through the day against Allied ships off Okinawa. 1 US destroyer is sunk and 9 other ships, including 4 transports, are lightly to moderately damaged. One severely damaged picket destroyer alone sustains losses of 68 killed and 71 wounded.
  • US Marine Corps F4Us down 3 D3A 'Betty' bombers off Okinawa at 0930 hours, and a Ki-27 'Nate' fighter over Yoron Shima at 1015 hours.
  • VMF(N)-533, VMF(N)-542, and VMF(N)-543 F6Fs down 2 E13A 'Jake' reconnaissance planes, a D3A 'Val' dive bomber, and an A6M Zero off Okinawa between 2025 hours and midnight.

Dutch East Indies

Australian positions on Tarakan are attacked by Japanese aircraft. Most of Borneo is cleared. Total Australian casualties in the campaign are 436 killed and 1,460 wounded.

Japan, Home Front

Tokyo is closed to all maritime shipping since its facilities have been destroyed.

Okinawa

On the left of the American line, the infantry of the 7th Div are still held up in front of Dick Hill and unable to outflank Shuri. On the right, the Marines continue mopping up in the ruins of Naha, among which some small Japanese units are hidden.

Japanese suicide aircraft launch a heavy 2-day series of strikes against US ships around Okinawa. More than a hundred Japanese planes are destroyed in the attacks, but they sink the US destroyer Drexler (DD-741) and damage 6 other ships including the high-speed minesweeper Southard (DMS-10), the minesweeper Gayety (AM-239), the high-speed transports Loy (APD-56) and Rednour (APD-102), the attack transport Sandoval (APA-194) and the degaussing vessel YDG-10.

Pacific

Over the next month a Japanese submarine pack makes unsuccessful attacks on US convoys on the Leyte-Okinawa and the Guam-Okinawa routes.

Philippines

On Luzon with the capture of Santa Fe, the US I Corps brings to an end the hard struggle in the mountains and the battle for the Villa Verde track. In the XI Corps sector, units of the 38th Div get within about 50 yards of the Guagua dam but are halted by Japanese fire.

On Mindanao operations against the Japanese units concentrating for the final defense of the mountainous central region north of Davao, go ahead slowly.

United States, Command

Adm William F. Halsey, Commander of the US 3rd Fleet, takes over command of all ships attached to the 5th Fleet. Task Force 58 becomes Task Force 38, and Vice-Adm John S. McCain takes over command in place of Vice-Adm Marc A. Mitscher.
