Battle of the Atlantic

The Italian submarine Capellini sinks the British steamer Shakespeare (5029t) between the African coast and the Canary Islands with the loss of 20 of her crew. Survivors are towed in their boats to within sight of land.

Britain, Home Front

Amy Johnson, a famous long-distance flier, dies in a crash over the Thames Estuary while working for the Air Transport Auxiliary.

China

The Communist New 4th Army is attacked by the Kuomintang.

North Africa

Bardia is taken along with 40,000 prisoners, 462 guns, 129 light tanks and more than 700 trucks. British casualties number 456 killed and wounded. Gen Annibale Bergonzoli is withdrawing toward Tobruk with a few thousand men.
