  • 318th Fighter Group P-47s attack targets on several islands south of Kyushu.

  • US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft support US 10th Army ground forces on Okinawa and attack airfields in the Sakishima Islands.

  • A VMF(N)-542 F6F downs an F1M 'Pete' reconnaissance plane off Okinawa at 2330 hours.

Czechoslovakia, Home Front

Former puppet President of the Bohemia-Moravia Protectorate, Dr Emil Hacha, dies in a Prague prison hospital at the age of 73, while awaiting trial.


Pacific

  • (?)A kamikaze hits the US carrier Bunker Hill off Okinawa, killing 373 men.
  • The US destroyer Caldwell (DD-605) is damage by a mine in the Brunei Bay area of Borneo.
  • The Japanese submarine I-165 is sunk by US naval land-bases aircraft (VPB-142) in the Central Pacific area.
  • The Japanese submarine chaser No. 2 is sunk by the US submarine Blueback (SS-326) in the Java Sea.

Philippines

On Luzon units of the 37th Div, US I Corps, reaches Aparri, on the north coast. The Japanese, mostly gathered on teh Sierra Madre in the northeast of the island, are cut off and reduced to a pitiful condition for lack of supplies and medical care. With the occupation by the Americans of the whole of the Cagayan valley, the campaign for the recapture of Luzon is now virtually over.

Balikpapan, Dutch Borneo. 27 June 1945. Aboard landing ship, tank (LST) which transported Australian troops and equipment to the landing. The LST carried approximately five hundred troops besides heavy equipment. A good proportion of the troops pitched their small tents on the deck of the ship.
