  • More than 40 fighter-bombers attack lines of communication and artillery positions at various locations.

  • US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft support US 10th Army ground forces on Okinawa and attack airfields in the Sakishima Islands.
  • 318th Fighter Group P-47s attack targets in the Sakishima Islands.
  • A VMF(N)-533 F6F downs a G3M 'Nell' bomber 73 miles from Ie Shima at 0157 hours.
  • A 548th Night Fighter Squadron P-61 crew downs a G4M 'Betty' bomber at sea at 2140 hours.

Air Operations, Volcano Islands

A 549th Night Fighter Squadron P-61 crew downs an A6M Zero near Iwo Jima at 0230 hours.

Pacific

  • The US destroyer escort Neuendorf (DE-200) is damaged in a collision in the Philippine Islands area.
  • The US motor minesweeper YMS-339 is damaged when it is accidentally bombed by US aircraft in the Balikpapan area of Borneo.
  • The US submarine Tirante (SS-420) sinks the Japanese merchant sailing junk No.284 Antung Maru off the west coast of Korea.
  • Mines sink Japanese merchant cargo ships Katsura Maru (884t), No.8 Kenkon Maru (882t) off Mutsure light and Tatsukaba Maru at the mouth of Karatsu Bay.

Philippines

In the 8th Army area, the 1st Battalion of the 155th Infantry Regiment, 31st Infantry Division, lands as the mouth of the Agusan River on Mindanao and moves to flank Japanese defenses from the east. They are resupplied entirely by air and attack Japanese units wherever they find them.

Soviet Union, Home Front

A Victory Parade is held in Moscow. Captured Nazi banners are ceremonially dragged across Red Square.

Thailand

The bridge over the River Kwai, symbol of the horrifying use of slave and POW labor by the Japanese, is destroyed in a British bombing raid. The Japanese rail link to Thailand is being cut to pieces by Allied bombing, with US forces even using new radar-guided bombs to make accurate hits on bridges and depots.
