Burma

In the north, the Chinese 22nd Div crosses the Irrawaddy River and captures Shwegu and while some of the division stays there as garrison, one regiment advances toward Man-tha. The 22nd Div is part of a major thrust by Allied units to encircle the Japanese 33rd Army in its positions between Lashio and Mogok. Although the advance has been hampered by politics (Gen Stilwell having lost his position as Chiang Kai-shek's chief of staff and Commander of the Northern Area Combat Command), it is steadily making progress.

Diplomatic Relations

Russia refuses to renew diplomatic relations with Switzerland because of the Swiss ban on the Communist party and Swiss-German trade. Part of that trade was in military equipment which the isolated Swiss had to provide under virtual duress. It is not until March of 1945 that the Swiss agree to end arms exports to Germany. By then the Allies are able to provide some consumer goods.

Palau Islands

A Japanese force of around 200 men land on Ngeregong Island, northeast of Peleliu. Although the island was previously occupied by a small unit of US Marines, it is now deserted. However, the US responds vigorously, imposing a naval blockade on the Denges Passage - the sea route taken by the Japanese to the island - before pounding the island with naval and aerial attacks.
