SOUTHERN SECTOR The Soviet 3rd Guards Tank and 18th Armies capture Berdichev. The 2nd Ukrainian Front opens its offensive against the German 8th Army. The 4th Guards, 52nd and 53rd Armies attack in the Kirovograd sector, with the 5th and 7th Guards assaulting farther south. The British X Corps withdraws the Peccia River bridgehead, since tanks are unable to cross the river. Monte Porchia, which dominates Cedro Hill, is still held by the enemy. In the II Corps area, TF A (6th Armored Infantry, reinforced) of the 1st Armored Division pushes toward Monte Porchia, reaching the north-south road in front of it. The 3rd Battalion, 135th Infantry, which began its attack the night of the 4th, clears part of the village strongpoints of San Vittore. The 1st Battalion, 135th, attacks toward La Chiaia, northwest of San Vittore, but is stopped by fire from San Giusta. In conjunction with the assault of the 135th Infantry, the 168th Infantry begins a move to outflank La Chiaia and takes Hill 425. The 1st SSF confines its activity to probing Monte Majo with patrols. Monte Cedro and Monte Porchia are held by the German forces of von Vietinghoff's 10th Army.
