  • 5 11th Medium Bomb Squadron B-25s, escorted by 10 P-40s, attack the airfield at Pailochi.

Air Operations, Europe

The day brings some of the most violent air fighting yet seen in Russia. The Luftwaffe makes ferocious attacks on Kursk. The Russians claim 162 'kills' for a loss of 30. Major air battles also continue over the Kuban.

Battle of the Atlantic

  • U-202 surfaces to transmit her daily report which is picked up by escorting ships of convoy HX-241. The Britsh sloop, HMS Starling, runs down the bearing of the U-boat's transmission and delivers a series of depth-charge attacks. The damage submarine surfaces and is finished off with cannon fire and more depth charges.

Mediterranean

A convoy of 129 ships with 19 escorts passes through the Straits of Gibraltar en route for Oran, Algiers, Malta and Tripoli.

Between June 2, 1943, when the first train carrying German prisoners arrived at the Frisco Railroad Depot in Aliceville, Alabama, and its closing in September 1945, the Aliceville Prisoner of War camp was home to over 6,000 German prisoners of war (POWs). Many of the first arrivals were members of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s famed Afrika Korps.

New Guinea

Alamo Force (code name used for the US 6th Army) plans the assaults on Kiriwina and Woodlark Islands (Operation CHRONICLE). Two battalions of the 158th RCT, reinforced by the 46th Engineer Regiment, anti-aircraft and support units, will capture Kiriwina. Col Prugh J. Herndon is to command the assault. Woodlark Island is the assignment of the 112th Cavalry Regiment, supported by the 12th Marine Defense Battalion, Seabees, and support units. Brig-Gen Julian W. Cunningham, the commander of the 112th, will command the assault. One battalion of the 158th RCt will be the Alamo Force reserve.

Pacific

The US submarine Tambor (SS-198) sinks the Japanese transport/cargo ship Eika Maru in the South China Sea.
