Religious Services
Under the camouflage-striped guns of the British battleship Prince of Wales--soon to be sunk with heavy loss of life--Churchill and Roosevelt attended Sunday services during the Atlantic Conference. In one of the great symbolic moments of the war, military leaders and sailors of both nations mingled together to sing the hymns that Churchill had personally selected. He wrote later, "Every word seemed to stir the heart. It was a great hour to live."

Eastern Front

The Luftwaffe hit Moscow in a night raid.

FINLAND AND NORWAY

Finnish forces close to Vousalmi are involved in protracted battles with the defending 7th Army. Two Soviet divisions have been trapped at Kexholm and another is pinned down at Sortavala.

NORTHERN SECTOR

Fighting along the Luga line intensifies as the 3rd Motorized Division of the LVI Panzer Corps launches a frontal assault upon Luga city. Fierce battles ensue as the 269th Infantry and the SS Polizei Divisions of the L Corps attack in support of the LVI Panzer.

Busch's 16th Army renews its attack along the southern shore of Lake Ilmen. The Soviets defend their positions with determinatin, involving the Germans in bitter battles.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

Strong German attacks toward Kiev reduce the hastily committed III Airborne Corps and shatter the 147th Rifle Division to mere shells. The Soviet 9th Army has retired to Nikolayev and begins the difficult task of evacuating its forces to the eastern bank of the bug.

Secret War

Nazi plots are uncovered in Argentina, Chile and Cuba. There have been signs in several Latin American countries in recent weeks of considerable pro-Nazi agitations.
