5 Norwegian merchant ships, interned at Gothenburg, Sweden since April 1940, elude German minefields and the Gneisenau and the Scharnhorst and rendezvous with the British Home Fleet at Skagerrak.

Balkans, Politics

The Bulgarian prime minister agrees to bring his country into the Tripartite Pact as soon as military arrangements with the Germans can be completed.

Battle of the Atlantic

German bombing sink 3 British steamers: Lurigethan (3564t) with the loss of 16 of her crew; Langlegorse (4524t) with the loss of the entire crew; and Mostyn (1859t) with the loss of 2 crewmen.

Italian East Africa

British forces advance to the Biskia railhead in Eritrea.

Mediterranean

Emergency repairs are complete on the carrier Illustrious and she is able to make for Alexandria with 24 knots available if necessary. Later the Illustrious will proceed to the United States for full repairs.
