Battle of the Atlantic

• The British steamer Alma Dawson (3985t) sinks on a defensive mine off Northern Island. The entire crew is rescued.
• The British anti-submarine trawler Amethyst (627t) sinks on a mine in the Barrow Deep in the Thames Estuary. Survivors are picked up by the British anti-submarine trawler Le Tiger.
• The British salvage vessel Preserver (630t) sinks on a mine near Milford have with the loss of 4 crewmen.
• The British steamer Alice Marie sinks on a mine southwest of Knob Light Vessel, Barrow Deep. The entire crew is rescued.
• The British steamer Port Hobart (7448t) is sunk by the German heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer near the Azores. The entire crew are made prisoners of war.

The Blitz

There is a heavy night raid on Bristol. In a raid lasting 6 hours 148 bombers of Luftflotte III drop 140 tons of high explosives and 12,500 incendiaries. It begins at 6:30pm with 14 He-111s of KG55, 4 oo III KG26 and some from KG100. 200 civilians are killed and 689 are injured.

Diplomatic Relations

Rumania's Antonescu holds a conference with Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, the chief of OKW, and explains the Romanian plan of defense against an attack by the USSR. Keitel assures him that the German Army will lend immediate assistance in the event of a Soviet invasion, which he considers highly unlikely.

As a result of this conversation, the German Military Mission will be reinforced by the transfer of the 16th Panzer Div to Romania during the second half of December.
