Australia, Politics

The government presents its war budget for the coming year. Twenty percent of the national income is to be devoted to war expenditure and is to be financed by considerable increases in taxation.

Battle of the Atlantic

  • U-103 attacks Convoy OB-244 and sinks the British steamer Daydawn (4768t) and the Greek steamer Victoria (6085t) about 250 miles west of Bloody Foreland. 2 crewmen are lost on the Daydawn, 36 survivors are picked up by the British corvette Rhododendron. All 27 crew members of the Greek ship are picked up by the British destroyer Castleton.
  • The British steamer Dakotian sinks on a mine in Dale Roads, Milford Haven. The entire crew is rescued.

German Raiders

The German armed merchant cruiser Pinguin sinks the British steamer Port Brisbane (8739t) in the Indian Ocean with the loss of 1 of her crew. 61 on board are made prisoners of war.

Greek-Albanian Front

The Greeks enter Koritza, an important town in southeastern Albania. They capture 2,000 prisoners, 135 guns and 600 machine guns. Almost all the invading Italian forces have now been driven back to Albania.
