Battle of the Atlantic

U-59 sinks the British trawlers Nidan (565t) and Lynx II (250t) northwest of the Orkneys. The entire crews of both trawlers are rescued by the British trawler Lady Hogarth.

Britain, Home Front

A German He-111 bomber is shot down by RAF fighters east of Dalkeith in southeastern Scotland -- it is the first German airplane shot down over the British Isles. Two of the 4-man crew survive. The aircraft is part of Luftflotte 2 which is based in the extreme north of Germany and is engaged in attacking shipping off the northern and eastern coasts of Scotland.
