  • A 311th Fighter Group P-51 downs a Ki-44 'Tojo' fighter over Peking's Southeast airfield at 1320 hours.

  • FEAF B-24s and B-25s, XIII Fighter Command P-38s, and US Navy and Marine Corps carrier-based aircraft attack the Balikpapan area.

  • 25 505th Very Heavy Bomb Group B-29s sow mines in Shimonoseki Strait and off Maizuru and Sakata.

Diplomatic Relations

Ruthenia is formally ceded to the Soviet Union by Czechoslovakia. Russia has thus acquired since 1939 a total of 300,000 square miles of new territory in Europe, land greater in size than the state of Texas.

United States, Planning

Pres Truman approves plans for the invasion of Japan. 2 operations are outlined, involving a total of 36 US divisions. The first, Operation OLYMPIC, proposes landing 13 divisions on Kyushu on November 1, 1945. The second, Operation CORONET, looks to land the remaining 23 divisions on Honshu on March 1, 1946.
