  • 12 341st Medium Bomb Group B-25s attack rail facilities and warehouses at Sinsiang.
  • In a separate mission, 10 B-25s and 4 14th Air Force P-51s also attack rail yards at Sinsiang.
  • 2 B-25s and 3 P-51s attack the rail line between Sinsiang and Hsuchang.
  • 17 fighter-bombers attack various targets.

US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft support US 10th Army ground forces on Okinawa and attack airfields in the Sakishima Islands.

Occupied Germany

Paul Ferdonnet, the 'Radio Traitor' of Stuttgart, is arrested by French troops in Bavaria. He is executed on August 5.

Okinawa

Gen Simon B. Buckner reduces the sector manned by the III Amphibious Corps, which has suffered the greatest losses, and increases that assigned to the XXIV Coprs. The front line goes from the southern suburbs of Naha to the spurs south of Shuri Ridge, reaching the east coast just south of Yonabaru.

The 4th and 29th Marines, 6th Div, after a heavy preliniary bombardment, land on the north coast of the Oroku peninsula, which is manned by Vice-Adm Minoru Ota's naval infantry, and take about half of the airfield there.
