Occupied Japan The occupation of Japan officially begins as an advance party arrives in the Home Islands. Col Gordon Blake and five men of the 68th Army Airways Communications System (AACS) Group, 7th AACS Wing, arrive at Atsugi airfield near Tokyo to set up communications equipment, air traffic control, and navigation aids for occupation troops arriving by air. They are part of a 150-man task force with 24 C-47 aircraft. They are the first American troops to land in Japan and are met by an honor guard from the Jaanese navy.
