Western FrontFRANCEIn the US 1st Army's VIII Corps area, the 6th and 4th Armored Divisions rush toward Granville and Avranches. CCB, 6th Armored Division, attacks through the bridgehead of CCA and drives some 3 miles beyond Brèhal along the road to Granville. CCB, 4th Armored Division, pushes into Avranches, where the bridges over the Sée River are captured. In the VII Corps area, the 1st Infantry and 3rd Armored Divisions continue southward on the right flank of the corps, while units to the east mop up. CCA forces a crossing of the Sienne at Gavray, and bridge construction is begun. CCB drives quickly toward Villedieu-lès-Poëles. The XIX Corps repels a strong counterattack on the right flank near Percy but makes little forward movement because of strong opposition. The V Corps runs into stout resistance as it continues southward. The 5th Division succeeds in crossing the Torigny-sur-Vire-Caumont road on the left flank, but progress elsewhere is negligible. |
