Western FrontFRANCEIn the US 1st Army area, the VIII Corps continues pursuit with the 6th and 4th Armored Divisions abreast spearheading and motorized combat teams of infantry following. CCA, 6th Armored Division, secures a crossing of the Sienne River near Pont de la Roche on the western flank of the corps. CCA, 4th Armored Division, drives to Cerences. The VII Corps' attack swerves from southwest to south and reaches the general line Cerences-Hambye-Percy. Enemy tank columns withdrawing along the highway from Roney to St Denis-le-Gast suffer extremely heavy losses under air, artillery and tank attacks. In the XIX Corps area, the 29th Division is committed on the right flank of he corps, relieving elements of CCA, 2nd Armored Division, and drives to positions east of Percy, where it is in contact with the VII Corps. The 30th Division meets strong opposition as it continues southward along the west bank of the Vire toward Tessy-sur-Vire. The V Corps pushes quickly toward Torigny-sur-Vire. |
