ItalyIn the US 5th Army's IV Corps area, Leghorn falls to the 34th Division without serious opposition, but retreating Germans have carried out a thorough demolition program within the city and on the harbor facilities. The 3rd Battalion of the 135th Infantry enters first, at 0200, and is followed by the 363rd Infantry. The 100th Battalion is given the responsibility for policing Leghorn and the 363rd Infantry for the left flank of the 34th Division while the 135th assembles to the southwest. Patrols of the 363rd Infantry moving north of Leghorn toward the Arno meet little opposition. To the east, the zone of the 168th Infantry is expanded to include that previously held by the 133rd Infantry. The 91st and 88th Divisions patrol actively in the center and on the right flank of the corps. In the FEC area, the 4th Mountain Division seizes Certalso while the Moroccan 2nd Division takes San Donato, northwest of Castellina. In the British 8th Army's XIII Corps area, the South African 6th Armored Division begins clearing the main ridge of the Chianti hills on the left flank of the corps, but stubborn enemy opposition limits progress elsewhere. Elements of the British 6th Armored Division secure a new crossing site over the Arno at Laterina. |
