ItalyIn the US 5th Army's IV Corps area, the 442nd Infantry, in the 34th Division sector, establishes an outpost line along Highway 67 southeast of Pisa. The 91st Division zone is expanded westward to include part of that previously held by the 34th Division and eastward to the 88th Division sector. On the right flank of the IV Corps, TF Ramey, moving forward with the 88th Division, gains the heights along the Orlo River, 6 miles east of Palaia, where it halts during relief of the FEC by the British. In the FEC area, the 4th Mountain Division gains the line San Stefano-Castelfiorentino-Certaldo on the left flank of the corps. In the British 8th Army area, the XIII Corps commander changes the plan of attack. Since the corps is soon to extend to the west to relieve the FEC and since the region between the Chianti hills and Route 2 is lightly defended by the Germans, the main effort is to be made on the left flank, where the New Zealand 2nd and Indian 8th Divisions are to attack up Route 2. The South African 6th Armored Division takes Monte San Michele and Monte Querciabella, permitting the 4th Division and the British 6th Armored Division in the Arno Valley to move forward again. |
