ItalyIn the US 5th Army's IV Corps area, the 34th Division begins the final assault on Leghorn with the 135th Infantry and the attached 363rd RCT of the 91st Division, the latter organized as TF Williamson under Brig-Gen Raymond Williamson. The attack reaches the outskirts of the city, but the Germans are able to extricate most of its garrison. Along the coast the 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion reaches Montenero. Elements of the 361st Infantry, 91st Division, reach the Arno at Pontedera by 0800. The 362nd Infantry arrives at the last ridge commanding the river, where it is ordered to halt. The 88th Division comes to a halt on the last heights overlooking the Arno above Palaia. The FEC renews its pursuit of the enemy upon finding that he is withdrawing all along the front. In the British 8th Army's XIII Corps area, the South African 6th Armored Division on the left flank of the corps overruns Radda in Chianti. In the Arno Valley, the 4th Division and the British 6th Armored Division are almost halted by the first of a series of enemy delaying lines abore Arezzo, but the 4th Division takes Montevarchi, on Highway 69. The Indian 8th Division passes to the command of the corps. The X Corps begins regrouping and shifting westward for the drive on Bibbiena while conducting limited attacks. The Indian 4th Division is slowly extending its hold on Alpe di Poti. The Germans are stubbornly defending the heights on either side of Citta di Castella but is forced back from Monte Arnato. The Polish II Corps breaks through to Ancona on the Adriatic Coast. |
