ItalyAn air offensive against the Po River bridges, MALLORY MAJOR, is begun by TAF medium bombers under ideal weather conditions. In the US 5th Army's IV Corps area, US armored units driving on Leghorn along Highway 1 in the coastal sector get beyond Castiglioncello. The 34th Division makes limited progress to the right. The 442nd Infantry pushes into the outskirts of Pastina, but the 133rd battles in vain for Hill 529, from which the Germans begin withdrawing after nightfall. The 363rd Infantry reverts to th 91st Division as that division prepares to enter the action. The 88th Division's 351st Infantry, with strong artillery and mortar support, overruns Laiatico. In the FEC area, the 4th Mountain Division drives forward almost to San Gimignano. |
