  • XIII Bomber Command B-24s attack the Puluwat and Woleai atolls.
  • VII Bomber Command B-24s returning from the Momote aiefield on Los Negros to the Marshall Islands attack the Truk Atoll.

Air Operations, CBI

BURMA
  • 9 10th Air Force B-25s attack the rail line between Hopin and Namma.
  • B-25s and fighter-bombers complete more than 100 sorties against rail lines and bridges around Hopin, Loilaw, Mogaung, and Myitkyina.
  • 14th Air Force B-25s attack a bridge at Wan Pa-Hsa.
CHINA
  • 5 341st Medium Bomb Group B-25s and 12 14th Air Force P-40s attack Japanese Army strongpoints and supply dumps at Loyang and along the Yangtze and Yellow rivers.
  • B-25s attack Lungling.
  • 48 fighters support the Chinese Army Y Force on the Salween River front.
  • 31 transports drop supplies to Chinese Army ground forces on the Salween River front.
  • 8 51st Fighter Group P-51s attack targets of opportunity in the Peking area.
  • 16 P-38s and P-51s dive-bomb the Nanchang bridge and nearby targets.
  • Japanese aircraft attack the airfields at Hengyang and Liangshan.
  • 4 USAAF aircraft are destroyed on the ground, and a fuel dump is blown up.
  • A 51st Fighter Group P-40 downs a Ki-27 'Nate' fighter over the Pingting airfield at Peking during the morning.
INDIA
  • 3 7th Heavy Bomb Group B-24s attack the road between Imphal and Tiddim (Burma).

Air Operations, Central Pacific

VII Bomber Command B-24s returning from the Momote airfield on Los Negros to the Marshall Islands attack Wake Island.

Air Operations, Europe

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
  • 50 Lancasters and 4 Mosquitos of Nos. 3 and 8 Groups attack a coastal gun position at Boulogne without a loss.
  • 30 Mosquitos are sent to Leverkusen, 12 Stirlings lay mines off the Dutch and French coasts and 11 Stirlings are on Resistance operations.
    • There are no losses.

Air Operations, New Guinea

  • V Bomber Command B-24s attack Japen Island.
  • Several B-25s attack Japanese Army positions on Biak Island, but all other air support is thwarted by bad weather.
  • B-25s attack the airfield at Timoeka and surrounding antiaircraft positions.
  • B-25s attack targets at Sarmi, Sawar, and in the Wakde Islands.
  • More than 70 B-24s, B-25s, A-20s, fighter-bombers, and RAAF aircraft attack Wewak.

Eastern Front

In the first flurry of summer activity the Germans throw in powerful attacks against Konev's forces near Jassy in Rumania.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The Germans launch a limited counterattack around Jassy but the fighting is only local and gains little.

Italy

Arce is taken by British troops of 8th Army after a stubborn battle. In the Anzio sector the US forces are nearing the important position at Velletri. In the US 5th Army sector the Germans hold their positions between Albano and Velletri in spite of repeated attacks by the numerically superior Allied forces.

Further north the Canadian I Corps continues its advance towards Frosinone.

New Guinea

There are minor skirmishes on Biak, where the Americans are re-grouping. In the Wadke-Sarmi area the US 158th Inf establishes a new defensive line along the Tirfoam River. There are Japanese night attacks along the perimeter of the Arare mainland beachhead, opposite Biak.

Occupied France

The Resistance sabotages equipment at the Decazeville Colliery. 3 more attacks will take place in June.

It appears that the nose of Lt Majerus' B-24H 42-52745 (Virgin Vampire) hit Ziegler's B-24H 41-29482 in the starboard waist, and then Majerus' number two engine chewed the tail off Ziegler's plane.
