ItalyIn the US 5th Army's VI Corps area, the 1st Armored Division attacks up the Albano road with CCB on the left and CCA on the right, passing through the 45th Division. Campoleone Station is cleared by noon but movement from there is slowed beyond there by firm resistance and there are heavy tank losses. The 45th Division's 180th Infantry follows CCB northward while the 179th pushes northward in the region east of the Albano road. The 157th Infantry is withdrawn to move into reserve. The 36th Division continues a holding action below Velletri. The Germans continue an effective defense of the Lanuvio area and inflict heavy casualties on the 34th Division. The II Corps takes over the sector east of Frascati between the VI Corps and the British 8th Army and assumes command of the 3rd Division once again. The 337th Infantry, 85th Division, closes in on the Rocca Massima-Giulianello area. In the IV Corps area, relief of the 88th Division is begun by the FEC. The 349th Infantry is relieved and departs for the Anzio beachhead. In the FEC area, the Moroccan 2nd Division is taking over the Siserno hill mass from the 4th Mountain Division and repels an enemy attack to keep Palombara Pass open until the withdrawal is completed. In the British 8th Army area, the Canadian I Corps begins a drive on Frosinone from Ceprano and takes Pofi. The XIII Corps finds Arce undefended and establishes a bridgehead across the upper Liri. The X Corps takes over the inactive zone of the Polish II Corps, which is to relieve the X Corps in the Adriatic coastal sector and continue the drive under AAI control. |
