- A VT-23 TBM crew downs a B5N 'Kate' torpedo bomber only 1 mile from the USS Princeton at 0915 hours.
- A VF-8 F6F downs 1 G4M 'Betty' bomber at sea 33 miles from Task Force 58 at 1214 hours.
- 5th Heavy Bomb Group B-24s attack the Woleai Atoll.
- During the night, VII Bomber Command B-24s attack the Truk Atoll.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
- 68 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitos of No. 5 Group return to the explosives factory at St Médard En Jalles and carry out a concentrated bombing of it without a loss.
- 54 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitos of No. 5 Group attack the Michelin tire factory at Clermont-Ferrand accurately with no losses.
Other Ops:
- 8 Mosquitos are sent to Oberhausen, 4 to the Achéres railway yards, 34 Halifaxes and 4 Stirlings lay mines off French ports and in the Frisians, 20 aircraft are on Resistance operations, and there are 6 Serrate patrols and 9 OTU sorties.

Air Operations, New Guinea - 27 V Bomber Command B-25s bomb and strafe Sawar and Sarmi.
- 6 B-25s bomb Wakde Island.
- More than 40 A-20s attack dumps at Cape Wom and targets of opportunity between But and Dagua.
- More than 130 A-20s, P-47s, and P-39s attack suspected troop areas and barge hideouts between the Sepik River and Cape Croisilles.
- During the night, 6 63rd Heavy Bomb Squadron SB-24 based in the Markham Valley attack Wakde Island in support of a US naval bombardment of the area.

Allied Preparations In a 'Tiger' training exercise for D-Day, 3 landing craft are sunk by German torpedo boats in Devon at Slapton Sandsends. At least 638 US soldiers are killed.

Battle of the Atlantic The German submarine U-421 is sunk by US Army aircraft off Toulon, France.

Carolines Over the next two days Adm Mitscher's TF 58, which includes 12 aircraft carriers, sends heavy strikes against the Japanese base at Truk. Of the establishment of 104 aircraft 93 are shot down for the loss of 35(26?) of the carriers' machines many of whose pilots are saved. Shipping, fuel and ammunition depots, airfields and other military installations are destroyed. With this blow Nimitz obliterates any possible danger to the New Guinea operations.

English Channel The Canadian destroyer Athabaskan, covering minelaying operations off the coast of France, is sunk by German torpedo boat T-24 off St Brieux. 128 of the crew are lost. 44 are rescued by the Canadian destroyer Haida. Another 85 of the crew are picked up by German vessels and made prisioners of war.

New Guniea The captured Japanese airfields at Hollandia and Aitape are reopened with great speed by American engineers.

Occupied France The Resistance cripples the newly repaired Dunlop factory, which had been damaged in an air raid, at Montluçon.

Pacific The Japanese submarine I-174 is sunk by aircraft from the US light carrier Monterey (CVL-26) and the destroyers MacDonough (DD-351) and Stephen Potter (DD-538) in the Caroline Islands area.
