RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
- 674 aircraft are sent to Nuremberg. In this total are 349 Lancasters, 221 Halifaxes and 104 Stirlings.
- After scratching two targets after the first Berlin raid, Nuremberg is selected as the target for this night. The marking for this raid is based mainly on H2S. 47 of the Pathfinder H2S aircraft are ordered to check their equipment by dropping a 1,000-lb bomb on Heilbron while flying to Nuremberg. 28 of the aircraft are able to carry out this order. Nuremberg is free of cloud but it is a very dark night. The initial Pathfinder markers are very accurate but a 'creepback' quickly develops which cannot be stopped because too many of the Pathfinder aircraft have trouble with their H2S equipment. The Master Bomber can do little to persuade the Main Force to move their bombing forward as only about a fourth of the crews can hear his broadcasts. There is only slight damage in the city as German night fighters attack in great force.
- 11 Halifaxes, 11 Lancasters and 11 Stirlings are lost.
Other Ops:
- 47 aircraft lay mines in the Frisians and off La Pallice, Lorient and St Nazaire and there are 10 OTU sorties. 1 mine-laying Wellington is lost.
