German RaidersBetween Iceland and the Faroes the British armed merchant cruiser Rawalpindi (16,697t), armed with only 4 6-inch guns, meets the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst and is blown out of the water with a loss of 265 lives. Scharnhorst has been sailing in the company of Gneisenau and because of this meeting they turn back from their raiding mission. They evade searches by many British ships including the battleship Warspite during the next few days and return to base safely. Their escape is made easier by the German ability to read many of the British naval codes.
