Okinawa

In the Oroku peninsula the Japanese are penned into a pocket about a thousand yards deep, but they put up a fanatical resistance. The 1st Marine Div fails to take Kunishi Ridge by assault. In the XXIV Corps sector, 1 regiment of the 96th Div reaches the town of Yuza, but is driven out again by the violent Japanese fire. The aritllery brings down fire on the Japanese cave positions on Mount Yaeju, east of which the Americans manage to take an important height.

US ships damaged in the day's action include the light cruiser Vicksburg (CL-86) in a collision and the landing ship dock Lindenwald (LSD-6) by accidental friendly fire.
