CBIBURMAIn the NCAC area, the 114th Regiment of the Chinese 38th Division, which is to move around the south end of Shweli Valley and cut the Namhkam-Namhpakka trail crosses the Shweli. The US 124th Cavalry, after a delay at the Shweli because of swollen waters, is assembled east of the river. In the British 14th Army's XXXIII Corps sector, the British 2nd Division and the Indian 19th Division take Swhwebo and the Indian 20th Division captures Budalin after prolonged fighting. In the British IV Corps sector, troops of the East African 28th Brigade and the Lushai Brigade, with help from a heavy air strike, advance toward Pakkoku, taking Gangaw in the Kabaw Valley. CHINAIn an effort to repoen the Canton-Hengyang stretch of he Canton-Hankow Railroad, the Japanese move forward as quietly as possible about this time. [PhilippinesLUZONThe Americans continue to land in the Gulf of Lingayen. The beachhead, a mile and a quarter wide and three and a half miles deep the previous day, is now considerably expanded. The main body of the American forces move south, toward Manila, occupying several villages; part of the I Corps advances north and northeast, taking San Jacinto. In the XIV Corps area, the 185th Infantry of the 40th Division takes Labrador while the 160th pushes along Highway 13 toward Aguilar, reaching the Umanday area. Because of a gap developing between the two regiments, the 108th Infantry (less the 3rd Battalion) is committed in the Polong area. The 148th Infantry, 37th Division, speeds inland to San Carlos as elements continue to the Army Beachhead Line. One 129th Infantry column moves without opposition to Malisiqui, within 2-1/2 miles of the Army Beachhead Line, while another reaches the Army Beachhead Line at Dumpay and maintains contact with the 148th Infantry. In the I Corps area, the 6th Division drives to the south and southeast to Mapandan and the vicinity of Santa Barbara. The 43rd Division's 103rd Infantry takes San Jacinto without opposition and pushes on toward Manoag and Hill 200. The 169th and 172nd Regiments run into organized defense positions on hills confronting them. The 169th takes Hill 470 and drives on Hill 351 and 318. The 172nd Infantry clears Hill 385 and moves slowly toward Hill 351. Japanese assault demolition boats make a surprise attack in Lingayen Gulf, sinking infantry landing craft that are providing indirect fire support to the landing force, and damaging two destroyers, a transport, and an LST. The Japanese air attacks continue, and so do the forays of explosive boats; two American destroyers, Wickes (DD-578) and Leray Wilson (DE-414) and 5 other ships, high-speed transport Clemson (APD-31), attack transport Dupage (APA-41), attack transport Latimer (APA-152), and landing craft LST-567 and LST-610, are damaged. [Western FrontThe 51st Div, British XXX Corps, 2nd Army, takes Laroche, about 10 miles northwest of Houffalize. The units of the US 1st Army, VII and XVIII Corps, prepare to step up the attack on the whole front, toward a line from Houffalize to Bovigny and toward St Vith. In the US 3rd Army sector, the 87th Div, VIII Corps, takes Tillet, while the III Corps continues to advance on the south flank.
