US 9th AIR FORCE
GERMANY:
  • 132 9th Air Force Bomb Division bombers attack three defended towns in western Germany.
  • 9th Air Force fighters and fighter-bombers support US Army ground forces.
  • 9th Air Force fighter pilots down 4 Luftwaffe fighters during the afternoon.
US 12th AIR FORCE
ITALY:
  • 12th Air Force B-25s attack four rail bridges in the Po River valley.
  • XXII TAC P-47s attack road and rail targets.
  • During the night, XXII TAC A-20s attack the Ghedi Airdrome, rail lines, and targets of opportunity.

CBI

BURMA

On the NCAC front, the Chinese 30th Division, with the 90th Regiment in the lead, is moving southward from the Bhamo area toward Namhkam over rought terrain.

CHINA

Gen Wedemeyer directs Gen Chennault to make a main effort of the 14th Air Force the defense of the air line to China and SOS. In addtion to providing logistical support of US military activities, to support certain Chinese forces in the China Theater.

On the Salween front, Chinese forces take Che-fang.

Eastern Front

In eastern Czechoslovakia, troops of the 4th Ukraine Front force the crossing of the Ondava River near Humenné and Trebišov.

In the attacks south of Budapest most of the Russian forces are held except around Pécs where the 57th Army is operating. Northeast of Budapest the 4th Ukraine Front attack the positions of the 1st Pzr Army along the Ondava River.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The 46th Army is held up around Budapest but the 57th Army continues to make progress near Pecsx. Elements of the 4th Ukrainian Front attack the 1st Panzer Army along the Ondava River.

Italy

US 5th Army

The British XIII Corps alters its plan of attack because of enemy withdrawals. The first phase calls for the capture of Monte Penzoloa by the 6th Armored Division.

British 8th Army

The British 8th Army continues its preparations for the attack fixed for December 3.

In the V Corps area, the Indian 10th Division secures the Casa Bettini bridge over the Montone and is relieved on the right flank by Canadian I Corps troops. The Canadian I Corps moves assault forces across the Montone via the bridge at Casa Bettini.

Occupied Crete

The Germans on Crete abandon all areas except large towns and move to Suda Bay and other coastal embarkation points.


Philippines

LEYTE

The offensive capacity of the Japanese is already severely limited by the lack of supplies and ammunition.

In the X Corps area, after preparatory fire, E Company of the 128th Infantry, 32nd Division, attacks through C Company of the 34th Infantry, 24th Division, to clear the knolls on the southeast end of Kilay Ridge, taking the first. The 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry, is ordered to withdraw from the ridge but is unable to do so for several days. The 112th Cavalry attempts in vain to clear the ridge southeast of Limon.

In the XXIV Corps area, a warning order for an assault on Ormoc is issued.

Due to limitations on logistics support and limited air cover available from the airfields on Leyte, Gen MacArthur delays the landing operation on Mindoro for 10 days. The new date is 15 December. Lt-Gen Walter Krueger has formed the Western Visayan Task Force under command of Brig-Gen William C. Dunkel, composed of the 19th RCT of the 24th Infantry Division and the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, along with air and naval assets, to conduct the mission. The ground element of the task force is to seize airfields in support of the Luzon amphibious assault.

Western Front

In the 9th Army area the advance northeast of Aachen reaches Linnich which is taken by 102nd Div.

The US VII Corps, 1st Army, is in difficulties in the Hürtgen Forest area. The 4th Div still cannot push clear of the Hürtgen Forest, gaining only 1,000 yards in 3 days of heavy fighting.

The XX Corps, US 3rd Army, continues to advance west of the Saar in readiness for the crossing of the river. The 90th Div is engaged in the sector south of Merzig, the 95th in the direction of Saarlautern and the 5th, brought up from Metz, is preparing an attack in the Warndt salient.

In Alsace, while the 79th Div, XV Corps, US 7th Army, liberates Schweigenhause, a few miles west of Haguenau, the 44th and 45th Divs further north are engaged in severe fighting with Gen Friedrich Wiese's German 19th Army near Tieffenbach and Zinswiller.[WE]
