Air Operations, Europe

In the heaviest aerial attack of the war in support of a ground operation, 10,000 tons of bombs from 1,200 8th Air Force planes and 1,100 Lancasters and Halifaxes obliterate the fortified towns of Düren, Julich and Heinsberg and the defense line west of Düren and east of Aachen. The bombing is a prelude to an offensive by the US 1st and 9th Armies to drive to the Rur River.

RAF BOMBER COMMAND
Daylight Ops:
  • Bomber Command is asked to bomb 3 towns near the German lines which are about to be attacked by the American 1st and 9 Armies in the area between Aachen and the Rhine. 1,188 Bomber Command aircraft attack Düren, Jülich and Heinsburg in order to cut communications behind the German lines. Düren is attacked by 485 Lancasters and 13 Mosquitos of Nos. 1, 5 and 8 Groups, Jülich by 413 Halifaxes, 78 Lancasters and 17 Mosquitos of Nos. 4, 6 and 8 Groups and Heinsberg by 182 Lancasters of No. 3 Group. 1,239 American heavy bombers also make raids on targets in the same area, without suffering any losses. More than 9,400 tons of high-explosive bombs are dropped by the combined bomber forces. The American advance is not a success. Wet ground prevent the use of tanks and the American artillery units are short of ammunition because of supply difficulties. The infantry advance is slow and costly.
    • For Bomber Command, 3 Lancasters are lost on the Düren raid and 1 Lancaster on the Heinsberg raid.
