ItalyIn the US 5th Army's IV Corps area, the 135th Infantry, on the 34th Division's western flank, clears about a third of Rosignano. The 442nd Infantry slightly improves its positions in the center and to the right, the 168th attempts in vain to reach Castellina, a key enemy position, but does overrun Hill 675 (Monte Vitalba). The 363rd Infantry is committed to the right of the 168th and gains ground on the heights east of Hill 675. CCA, 1st Armored Division, gets elements of the 361st Infantry into Casole d'Elsa before dawn after most of the enemy garrison has withdrawn. After this action, the 361st Infantry is detached from the 1st Armored Division and reverts to the 91st Division. Subsequent action of the 1st Armored Division on the right flank of the IV Corps is limited until the time of its relief. In the FEC area, the Algerian 3rd Division completes its withdrawal from the corps zone to Naples and is replaced by the 4th Mountain Division. In the British 8th Army area, the XIII Corps, with the South African 6th Armored Division on the left, the British 4th Division in the center, and the British 6th Armored on the right, moves forward to the Monte Lignano hill mass below Arezzo against sporadic resistance. The 6th Armored Division, using Highway 71, the most direct route to Arezzo, quickly reaches Castiglion Fiorentino but is slowed down soon afterward by demolitions. |
