Italy

The AAI (Allied Armies in Italy) Chief of Staff issues an Appreciation concerning the course of action after the necessary forces for ANVIL have withdrawn from Italy. It concludes that the offensive in Italy can be continued on a limited scale but recommends that the AAI be reinforced if possible in order to secure the Ljubljana Gap and invade southern Germany.

In the US 5th Army's IV Corps area, the 133rd Infantry of the 34th Division closes along the Cecina and takes Cecina Marine at its mouth, concluding the bloody action of the left flank of the corps. The 135th Infantry consolidates and strengthens its bridgehead across the Cecina then moves to the west, pinching out the 133rd. CCA, 1st Armored Division, suffers heavy losses in tanks and personnel during futile attempts to enter Casole d'Elsa. The FEC takes Simignano, southwest of Siena, and pushes on toward Siena.

In the British 8th Army's XIII Corps area, patrols reach the junction of Highways 71 and 75 without opposition. The South African 6th Armored Division advances through Sinalunga, from which the Germans have withdrawn. The 4th Division takes Fojano without opposition. The X Corps is unopposed throughout the day but regains contact with the enemy after dark.
