ItalyThe US 5th Army opens an offensive to destroy the German 14th Army. In the VI Corps area, British and US troops continue futile efforts to break through to Albano and block the escape of the enemy to the east. The British 1st Division, on the extreme left, is unable to advance. The US 45th Division makes limited progress as the US 34th Division gains a little ground below Lanuvio. The 141st Infantry, 36th Division, takes Velletri after a hard battle. The 142nd Infantry consolidates its positions on Monte Artemisio. The 143rd Infantry, relieves of Maschio d'Ariano by the 337th Infantry, 85th Division, advances southwestward along the ridge. The II Corps opens the final offensive toward Rome, aiming first at Highway 6 and Cave road. On the left flank, the 85th Division, with the 337th Infantry on the left and the 338th on the right, attacks toward Monte Ceraso against strong resistance. The 349th Infantry, 88th Division, is committed to the right, where a gap is developing, and drives to the heights north of the railroad. On the right flank of the II Corps, the 3rd Division attacks northward in the Valmontone area. The 30th Infantry and TF Howze, reinforced by elements of the 7th Infantry, make slow progress on the left. On the right, the 15th Infantry pushes to Highway 6 while the 1st SSF takes the high ground southeast of Valmontone. The 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron screens the right flank of the 3rd Division. The IV Corps is officially withdrawn from the line at 1400. In the British 8th Army area, the Canadian I Corps, moving up Route 6 toward Rome, reaches Ferentino. |
