ItalyIn the US 5th Army's VI Corps area, the 45th and 34th Divisions gain ground on the left flank of the corps against spotty resistance. The 1st Armored Division is alerted for a breakthrough attempt. The 142nd Infantry, 36th Division, is to exploit the breakthrough if it is achieved by the armor. The 36th Division commits the 141st Infantry northeast of Velletri to plug the gap existing between the 143rd Infantry and the 3rd Division. On the right flank of the corps, the 3rd Division's 15th infantry clears Artena. TF Howze fails to reach Highway 6 north of Artena but holds positions dominating it. The 1st SSF puts artillery on the crest of the hill above Artena on the extreme right. The 3rd Division organizes the Artena area for defense and repels tank-infantry counterattacks.
The II Corps turns over its sector and troops, except for organic units and the 85th Division, to the IV Corps, during the night of the 27th. 85th Division troops move into Sezze and the hills south of Roccagorga. The 350th Infantry, 88th Division, seizes Roccagorga. The 351st Infantry relieves the 85th Division on the left of the 350th. The FEC clears Amaseno, Monte Siserno, and Castro dei Volsci. In the British 8th Army area, the Canadian I Corps crosses element over the Liri in assault boats under fire and occupies Ceprano. In the XIII area, elements of the 78th Division start toward Ceprano in order to pursue the enemy toward Frosinone from there. The 6th Armored Division, assisted by the Indian 8th Division, continues efforts to take Arce. In the X Corps area, the Italian Corps of Liberation seizes Monte Cavallo from the enemy's rear guards. The New Zealand 2nd Division gets units to Atina. |
