BOMBER COMMAND
Evening Ops:
  • 159 aircraft to Nuremberg: 71 Lancasters, 41 Wellingtons, 34 Stirlings and 13 Halifaxes
  • Crews ordered to bomb at low altitudes; Pathfinders mark area well and crews report good bombing results; reports from the ground do not confirm this; bombs hit as far away as town of Erlangen, 10 miles to the north; bomb reports from the ground indicate that maybe 50 aircraft hit the city, 137 people killed
    • 14 Wellingtons, 4 Lancasters, 3 Stirlings and 2 Halifaxes are lost
  • 113 aircraft to Saarbrücken: 71 Wellingtons, 24 Halifaxes, 17 Hampdens and 1 Stirling
  • Moon is four fifths full and it is judged that this relatively undefended target could be safely hit while the main raid on Nuremberg is taking place; raid is not a success as bombs are scattered over a wide area; in Saarbrücken 15 houses are destroyed, 51 seriously damaged and 1 person killed
    • 4 Hampdens, 2 Halifaxes and 1 Wellington are lost
Minor Ops:
  • 3 Halifaxes make leaflet flights without loss

Formation of the Estonian Legion

Formation of the Estonian Legion
August 28, 1942, on the anniversary of Tallinn' liberation, Estonian General Commissar SA-Obergruppenführer Karl Siegmund Litzmann announced that the German higher board gave the permission to form the Estonian Legion that would operate under the Waffen-SS. At first men were recruited from eastern and police battalions. The legion was supposed the be the size of a regiment and consist of three battalions (each having four companies) and grenade launchers and antitank defence company. The first meeting of the legion founders took place in Pihkva
SOUTHERN SECTOR

The XLVIII Panzer Corps has completed its redeployment aroung Abganerovo and prepares to strike the 64th Army in its flank. The XIV Panzer Corps fights its way across the land bridge, the 3rd Motorized Division securing communications with the 16th Panzer. The 60th Motorized Division still lags behind, being out of touch with the 3rd and 16th Divisions. Soviet attacks against the 16th Panzer Division relents as the 66th Army wears itself out. The pressure that has been brought to bear upon the XIV Panzer Corps has prevented the Germans from attacking straight into Stalingrad after they reach the Volga, giving the Soviets a chance to construct their defenses. In the Caucasus, the 17th Army captures Anapa as it draws closer to Novorossysk.

Eastern Front, Orel sector, Aug 28, 1942: A Soviet attack has just been repulsed and the MG-34 machine gun crew is observing the Russian retreat, always ready to go back to action.
