Germans Advance through the Ukraine

Germans Advance through the Ukraine
While the battle for Leningrad continued unabated, the Russian armies farther south counter-attacked fiercely in the Smolensk and Gomel areas thereby seriously threatening the German flanks. In order to relieve this pressure the enemy opened a new attack on Kiev which resulted in the fall of Chernigov, to the north of the city, on the 12th and of Kremenchug, on the Dnieper, on the 14th. The German tanks seen above are advancing through heavy Russian artillery fire towards objectives in the Ukraine.
NORTHERN SECTOR

Fierce fighting rages around Sinyavino as the Soviet 54th Army attempts to relieve the pressure on Leningrad. Meanwhile, OKH orders the XLI Panzer Corps to Army Group Center.

CENTRAL SECTOR

The XXIV Panzer Corps captures Konotop and Romny as the Soviet Reserve Front assumes a defensive posture.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

Disaster is looming in the south for the Red Army: the 5th Army is cut off on the Desna and the 38th Army cannot dislodge the Germans from Kremenchug. To compound problems, Stalin forbids any withdrawal of Budenny's Southwestern Front.[MORE]
