Battle of the Atlantic

  • A German u-boat, U-203, sights the American battleship Texas within the area the Germany has declared is the operational area for u-boats. However, after checking with the U-boat Command, the Texas is not attacked.
  • U-123 sinks the Portuguese steamer Ganda (4333t) off Casablanca with the loss of 5 crewmen. 61 survivors are picked up and landed in Portugal.
  • The Norwegian steamer Schieland (2249t) from Convoy FS-520 is sunk by German bombing in the North Sea. 9 survivors are picked up by the British destroyer Mendip.

Finland, Politics

All reservists under the age of 45 are called up in a general mobilization.

Mediterranean

  • The Italian submarine Ondina sinks the Turkish steamer Refah (3805t) 40 miles south of Mersin, Turkey. 25 crewmen and 142 passengers are lost.
  • The Italian steamer Buccari (4543t) is lost in an explosion at Taranto.

Soviet Union, Home Front

In Moscow, an air unit is set up for the defense of the captital. It is one of the few concessions to imminent danger of attack which the Soviets allow themselves.
