Air Operations, Europe

  • The Italians bomb Salonika.
  • An RAF bomber squadron arrives in Greece to help fight the Italians.

Battle of the Atlantic

  • U-99 under Otto Kretschmer, torpedoes 2 British Armed Merchant Cruisers: the Laurentic (18,724t), with 2 dead, and the Patroclus (11,314t), with 76 dead. Also sunk in the northwestern approaches by U-99 is the merchant steamer Casanare (5376t) with the loss of 8 of her crew. 54 survivors are picked up by the British destroyer Beagle.
  • The British steamer Kildale (3877t) is sunk in a German air attack on Convoy WN-29 with the loss of 2 crewmen.
  • The British submarine Sturgeon sinks the Danish steamer Sigrun (1337t) in Oslofjord.

The Blitz

Liverpool is heavily attacked in the continuing German bombing campaign. Four ships in the port are sunk and other damage is inflicted.

Greek-Albanian Front

In the Pindus Mountains the Greeks defeat the 3rd Alpini Div.
