Air Operations, Europe

  • The Italians bomb Salonika.
  • In one of the more extraordinary aviation incidents of the war, Greek pilot Marinos Mitralexis, having run out of ammunition, rams his machine into a Savoia-Marchetti SM-79 bomber, lands his damaged fighter and promptly captures the crew who have parachuted to safety.

Battle of the Atlantic

The British destroyer Antelope, escorting Convoy OB-237, sinks U-31 northwest of Ireland with the loss of 2 of her crew. 43 are taken prisoner.

The Blitz

London is bombed. A large fire is started at Barker's, Kensington.
