Britain, Home FrontA large proportion of people evacuated from cities in Sept 1939 have now returned home; only about 300,000 schoolchildren, out of an original 1 million, remain in country reception areas. [ | ]German RaidersThe first German armed merchant cruiser, Atlantis, sails for operations against Allied shipping. Up to 7 vessels will be in service later in 1940 and 1941. Generally these ships are better armed than their British equivalents and must therefore be hunted down by real cruisers. They cause considerable disruption. Their total successes in their period of operation are 87 ships of more that 600,000 tons, which is approximately one-fifth of British losses in this time. The Atlantis will be the most successful raider. In a cruise lasting until Nov 22, 1941 she will sink 22 ships of 145,700 tons. [ | ] |
