Baltic Sea

The Finnish steamer Clio (996t) is seized by German warships and taken to Pillau.

Battle of the Atlantic

U-20 sinks 4 steamers: the Norwegian Faro (844t) 15 miles southeast of Copinsay; the Danish Fredensburg (2094t); the Danish England (2319t); and the Norwegian Hosanger (1591t), all in the same area of the North Sea. The Faro loses 7 crewmen, 8 are rescued. Fredensburg loses her entire crew of 20. The England loses 20 crewmen with 1 survivor and the Hosanger loses 17 of her crew with 1 survivor.

Finland - Winter War

Day 59

Soviet artillery continues its bombardment of the main Finnish defensive positions on the Isthmus. Badly damaged by the Soviet artillery is the 'Million Fort' in the Lähde sector east of Lake Summajärvi. IV Army Corps small unit commanders meet at 13th Div's command post. Maj-Gen Hägglund orders the 'mottis' at Kelivaara and West Lemetti to be taken. The offshore island of Putkisaari on the Ladoga Karelia near Pitkäranta is taken by Soviet troops.
