The last remnants of the Posen garrison surrenders. Arnswalde is also taken.

The 7th Guards Army abandons its bridgehead on the Hron River. Dietrich's 6th SS Panzer Army is forming in strength around Vienna as it prepares for the counteroffensive. The attack aims to break the Soviet forces on the west bank of the Danube and guarantee the safety of the Hungarian oilfields.

During the first 3 weeks of February the Germans have significantly reinforced Army Group Vistula. The army group now deploys 34 divisions with 450,000 men, 5,000 arty pieces and 1,000 panzers or assault guns.
