Western Europe21st ARMY GROUPUS 1st Army In the VII Corps area, the 84th Division gains its final objectives, taking Nadrin, Filly, Petite Mormont, and Grande Mormont. A 4th Cavalry Group patrol makes visual contact with a US 3rd Army patrol. The 2nd Armored Division seizes Wibrin, Cheveoumont, Wilogne, and Dinez. The 3rd Armored Division takes Mont le Ban and Baclain. The 83rd Division clears Honvelez and the high ground near Bovigny. In the XVIII (Airborne) Corps' 106th Division sector, the 517th Parachute Infantry clears Henumont and continues southward. The 424th Infantry secures Coulee and Logbiermé. Some elements of the 30th Division attack toward Hédomont and Thirimont, during the night, and take Hédomont before dawn. Other elements clear Villers and Ligneuville and gain bridgeheads across the Amblève River at these points. 12th ARMY GROUPUS 3rd Army In the VIII Corps area, the 17th Airborne Division's 507th Parachute Infantry secures Bertogne, from which the Germans have fled, and the 194th Glider Infantry takes Givrouille, then both regiments continue to the Ourthe River. A task force of CCA, 11th Armored Division, clears the Falize woods and drives along the Longchamps-Compogne highway until stopped by heavy fire. The 101st Airborne Division continues to attack toward the Noville-Rachamps-Bourcy area. Elements are forced out of Recogne and Foy, but both are regained in counterattacks. The enemy is cleared from Cobru. A tank task force of CCB, 11th Armored Division, followed by an infantry task force, enters Noville but withdraws under intense fire. In the III Corps area, CCA of the 6th Armored Division clears the woods east of Wardin and captures Benonchamps. CCB finishes clearing Mageret. Elements of the 90th Division drive toward Niederwampach. Having cleared small pockets during the night, the 26th Division moves combat patrols against the enemy south of the Wiltz River. In the XX Corps area, the 94th Division opens a series of small-scale attacks to improve defensive positions in the Saar-Moselle triangle south of Wasserbillig, a strong fortified switch position of the West Wall. The 376th Infantry takes Tettingen and Butzdorf. The 95th Division moves two battalions to objectives in the Saarlautern bridgehead area and then withdraws them as planned. 6th ARMY GROUPUS 7th Army In the XXI Corps area, the 142nd RCT of the 36th Division moves to the 103rd Division's zone to cover the relief of that division by TF Herren. In the VI Corps area, the enemy continues a vigorous defense of the Bitche salient. The 45th Division makes slight gains along its perimeter. The 14th Armored Division battles the enemy in Rittershoffen and Hatten. |
