Western FrontSOUTHERN FRANCEIn the US 7th Army area, the 1st ABTF is reinforced by the 1st SSF, which is committed in the center to replace the British 2nd Parachute Regiment. The 517th RCT is given the task of patrolling the roads west and south of the Larche Pass and maintaining contact with friendly forces to the west. In the VI Corps area, the 3rd Division improves its positions on the left flank of the corps. Elements of the 157th Infantry, 45th Division, and FFI forces clear Apt. The 180th Infantry reduces the light rearguard opposition in the Rognes area. The 179th Infantry moves toward Grenoble to join the 36th Division. 36th Division units take Grenoble without opposition and reconnoiter beyond there without incident. The 141st RCT starts westward to the Rhône Valley to back up TF Butler in the Montélimar area and emplaces 2 field artillery battalions near Marsanne to fire across the Rhône. The 142nd RCT arrives at Gap. In the French Army B area, the USS Omaha accepts the surrender of the garrison of Porquerolles Island, off the Giens Peninsula. In the II Corps area, while the 1st Division continues to the west toward Toulon along the coast against strong resistance, the Linares Group of the Algerian 3rd Division seizes Mt Faron, the last of the hilltop fortresses north of Toulon, and the 9th Colonial Division forces the enemy from La Vallette, northeast of Toulon. With the reduction of Mt Faron, a way is opened into Toulon through the Dardennes ravine. On the northern flank, the Chapuis Group of the Algerian 3rd Division and elements of the 1st Armored Division invest Marseille. |
